UNC Falls to Georgia Tech in Last-Second Heartbreaker
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In a stunning finish this afternoon, the North Carolina Tar Heels fell 41-34 to Georgia Tech after a last-second, 68-yard touchdown run by Jamal Haynes. The game, played at Kenan Stadium, saw the Tar Heels rally to tie it late, only to be undone by Georgia Tech’s ground game in the final moments. The loss marks UNC’s fourth straight and leaves their season hanging in the balance.
A Back-and-Forth Battle
From the start, it was a hard-fought contest. Georgia Tech opened the scoring after a sack-fumble recovery set up a short 2-yard touchdown run by Chad Alexander. UNC quickly answered back with a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Jacolby Criswell to tie the game at 7.
Georgia Tech regained the lead with a field goal and a rushing touchdown from quarterback Haynes King, pushing their advantage to 17-7. But just before halftime, UNC running back Omarion Hampton broke free for a 71-yard run, setting up a touchdown pass from Criswell to wide receiver J.J. Jones to make it 17-14 heading into the break.
Georgia Tech's Ground Game Takes Over
The second half saw Georgia Tech’s ground attack take control of the game. The Yellow Jackets rushed for 371 yards, keeping North Carolina’s defense on its heels. Jamal Haynes was the standout, finishing with 170 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning run with just 16 seconds left on the clock.
Haynes King also played a pivotal role, rushing for 107 yards and two touchdowns. His mobility and ability to extend plays kept UNC’s defense guessing throughout the afternoon, as the Tar Heels struggled to stop Georgia Tech’s option-based offense.
Late Rally Falls Short for UNC
Despite being down for much of the second half, UNC managed to stay in the game. Criswell led the Tar Heels on a fourth-quarter rally, which included a key fourth-down conversion and his second rushing touchdown of the game, cutting Georgia Tech’s lead to 34-31 with just over three minutes remaining.
After forcing Georgia Tech to punt, UNC had one last chance to tie the game. Criswell drove the team into field goal range, where Noah Burnette knocked through a 26-yard field goal to tie it at 34 with under a minute remaining.
However, Georgia Tech struck back immediately. On just the second play of their final drive, Jamal Haynes broke free for a 68-yard touchdown run, silencing the home crowd and leaving UNC with no time to mount another comeback.
UNC’s Offensive Struggles
Omarion Hampton provided a spark for the Tar Heels, rushing for 137 yards, including the 71-yard burst in the second quarter. However, North Carolina struggled to find consistency in the passing game. Criswell finished with 185 yards on 16-of-28 passing, with one touchdown. The Tar Heels were plagued by dropped passes and penalties, which stalled multiple drives throughout the game.
Criswell was also under constant pressure from Georgia Tech’s defense, which recorded several sacks and forced him into hurried throws. The lack of offensive balance proved costly for UNC, as they were unable to keep pace with Georgia Tech’s high-powered rushing attack.
Defensive Issues Continue for North Carolina
North Carolina’s defense, which has been a point of concern in recent weeks, again struggled to contain a mobile quarterback. Georgia Tech’s Haynes King consistently found running lanes, and the Tar Heels’ missed tackles and blown assignments allowed Georgia Tech to control the clock and the tempo of the game.
UNC’s inability to stop the run was most glaring in the second half, where Georgia Tech dominated time of possession and wore down the Tar Heels' defense. The Yellow Jackets finished with 371 rushing yards, taking advantage of UNC’s defensive weaknesses, particularly in stopping the option.
Tough Road Ahead for UNC
Today’s loss drops UNC to 3-4 on the season, with an 0-3 record in ACC play. This marks their fourth consecutive loss, putting their hopes for a bowl game in jeopardy. Head coach Mack Brown will need to address the team’s defensive shortcomings and offensive inconsistency as they enter their bye week. The Tar Heels’ schedule only gets tougher from here, with three of their next four games on the road.
Despite the late-game heroics to tie the score, UNC’s inability to stop Georgia Tech’s rushing attack will be a major area of concern heading into the final stretch of the season. The Tar Heels will have to regroup during their bye week before traveling to face Virginia on October 26.
Georgia Tech Rides Momentum
With today’s win, Georgia Tech improves to 5-2 on the season and strengthens their standing in the ACC. Their dynamic rushing attack, led by Jamal Haynes and Haynes King, has propelled the Yellow Jackets into the conversation for a potential ACC title bid. They will face their toughest challenge yet next week when they host No. 11 Notre Dame at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
