Pittsburgh Survives Upset Bid from Cal in 17-15 Defensive Showdown
PITTSBURGH – This afternoon, the No. 22 Pittsburgh Panthers narrowly escaped with a 17-15 victory over the California Golden Bears at Acrisure Stadium. In a game that saw Pittsburgh struggle offensively, their defense stepped up to secure the win and maintain the team’s undefeated record.
Desmond Reid Shines for Pitt's Offense
Running back Desmond Reid was the key to Pittsburgh’s offensive success, scoring both of the Panthers' touchdowns. His 72-yard touchdown run on a bold fourth-and-1 play in the second quarter gave Pittsburgh a crucial 14-7 lead. Reid finished the game with 120 rushing yards on 16 carries, providing the much-needed spark for an otherwise inconsistent offense.
Quarterback Eli Holstein faced pressure throughout the game, completing just 14 of 28 passes for 133 yards. Holstein threw two costly interceptions in Cal territory during the second half, which allowed Cal to stay within striking distance.
Pittsburgh’s Defense Holds Firm
While Pitt's offense struggled in the second half, their defense took control. The Panthers sacked Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza six times, with defensive end Jimmy Scott leading the charge with three sacks. Pitt's defense kept Cal at bay for much of the second half, especially when the Panthers’ offense failed to add more points after halftime.
Pittsburgh’s defense was especially crucial in the fourth quarter when Cal mounted a comeback. The Golden Bears trimmed the Panthers' lead to 17-15 after Mendoza connected with tight end Jack Endries for a 19-yard touchdown. However, a failed two-point conversion attempt prevented Cal from tying the game.
Missed Opportunities Cost Cal
Cal had multiple chances to take the lead late in the game but couldn't capitalize. The Golden Bears committed 12 penalties for 110 yards, many of which stalled key drives. One of their best chances to win came with just under two minutes remaining, but kicker Ryan Coe missed a 40-yard field goal attempt, which could have given Cal the lead. The kick went wide right, keeping Pitt’s lead intact.
Despite the missed opportunities, Cal’s defense forced a three-and-out on Pitt's ensuing possession, giving their offense one last chance with under a minute to play. However, Cal's offense could not convert on the final drive, sealing the win for Pittsburgh.
Cal’s Resilient Effort Falls Short
Despite the loss, Cal showed resilience, particularly through quarterback Fernando Mendoza. Mendoza finished with 272 passing yards, completing 27 of 37 passes and throwing a late touchdown to Endries. Tight end Jack Endries had a standout performance, leading all receivers with eight catches for 119 yards.
Without star running back Jaydn Ott, Cal’s ground game struggled to find its footing. Backup running back Jaivian Thomas managed just 72 rushing yards on 17 carries, as the Golden Bears found it difficult to establish a balanced offensive attack.
Cal has now dropped three games this season by a combined eight points, and the team will need to address key mistakes if they hope to turn the season around.
Pittsburgh Looks to Continue Undefeated Streak
With this win, Pittsburgh improved to 6-0 and 2-0 in ACC play, keeping them in the race for a potential ACC title. While the Panthers’ offense struggled in the second half, their defense was able to make game-saving plays and keep Cal at bay.
Desmond Reid’s strong performance on the ground, along with Pitt's defensive pressure, played crucial roles in the victory. However, Pittsburgh’s offense, which had averaged over 45 points per game before today, will need to regain consistency as they face tougher competition in the weeks ahead.
Pittsburgh will look to extend their unbeaten streak when they host Syracuse on Thursday. With their defense showing they can handle pressure situations, the Panthers are focusing on improving their offensive execution for their upcoming games.
Cal Faces Tough ACC Schedule Ahead
For Cal, the loss drops them to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in ACC play. While the Golden Bears have shown they can compete with top-ranked teams, their penalties and missed opportunities have continued to be an issue. Cal’s defense showed potential today, but the team will need to clean up the errors to stay competitive in the ACC.
The Golden Bears return home next week to face North Carolina State in what could be a critical game for their season. With star running back Jaydn Ott's status still uncertain, Cal will need more consistency from their offense if they hope to get back on track.
