Tarleton State Blows Out Utah Tech with 42 Unanswered Points in the First Half
STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Tarleton State left no doubt in tonight’s Homecoming game, exploding for 42 unanswered points in the first half to blow out Utah Tech 42-0 at Memorial Stadium. The Texans’ offense, led by Kayvon Britten’s three touchdowns, was unstoppable from the opening kickoff, and their defense pitched a shutout for the second consecutive year at Homecoming.
With the win, Tarleton improves to 6-1 on the season and 3-0 in United Athletic Conference play, while Utah Tech remains winless at 0-7.
First-Half Offensive Onslaught
Tarleton wasted no time establishing control, putting up 28 points in the first quarter alone. Just three plays into the game, running back Kayvon Britten took off on a 62-yard touchdown run to give the Texans an early lead. Britten followed it up with an 18-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter, pushing the lead to 14-0.
As Utah Tech struggled to find any rhythm, Tarleton’s offense kept the pressure on. Braelon Bridges powered through the Trailblazers’ defense for a 3-yard score, making it 21-0 with under two minutes left in the opening quarter. To cap off the dominant first quarter, Derrel Kelley III added a 10-yard touchdown run, pushing the Texans’ lead to a commanding 28-0.
Britten's Big Performance
Kayvon Britten continued his outstanding night in the second quarter, scoring his third touchdown on a 17-yard run. By halftime, Britten had racked up 135 rushing yards on just eight carries, with an average of 16.9 yards per rush. His three-touchdown performance gave Tarleton a 35-0 lead before the end of the first half.
With the game effectively over, Britten and several other starters were given the second half off, having already done more than enough to secure the win. Britten’s performance tonight brought his season total to 12 rushing touchdowns, cementing his place as one of the top backs in the FCS.
Gabalis and Cooper Add to the Aerial Attack
Not to be outdone, Tarleton quarterback Victor Gabalis and wide receiver Darius Cooper delivered the final blow of the first half. Gabalis connected with Cooper on a stunning 71-yard touchdown pass, extending the Texans’ lead to 42-0 with 9:25 left before halftime. Gabalis finished the half with 201 passing yards, completing 10 of 12 passes, before sitting out the second half.
Cooper was the star of the receiving corps, pulling in 141 yards on four catches, including the 71-yard score that capped off the Texans' offensive explosion in the first half.
With such a dominant performance in the first two quarters, backup quarterback Daniel Greek took over in the second half, as the Texans shifted into cruise control.
Defensive Shutout Completes the Dominance
While Tarleton’s offense was lighting up the scoreboard, their defense was equally impressive, holding Utah Tech to just 228 total yards and keeping the Trailblazers off the scoreboard. The Texans’ defense sacked Utah Tech quarterback Bronson Barben three times and forced two turnovers, never allowing the Trailblazers to gain any momentum.
Linebackers Brandon Tolvert and Courtland Stephens led the defensive charge, with Tolvert tallying 1.5 sacks and two tackles for loss. Kasyus Kurns forced a fumble that was recovered by Jeremiah Postell, adding to Utah Tech’s woes.
Utah Tech’s offense was stagnant throughout the game, managing just 84 rushing yards and struggling to find consistency in the passing game. Barben completed 17 of 40 passes for 129 yards but was under pressure for much of the night, as Tarleton’s defense swarmed him at every turn.
Special Teams Contribute to Field Control
Tarleton’s special teams unit also played a key role in maintaining field position. Punter Adrian Guzman averaged 46.2 yards on six punts, two of which were downed inside Utah Tech’s 20-yard line. Guzman’s punts consistently flipped field position, further stifling Utah Tech’s ability to get anything going on offense.
Homecoming Celebrations Highlight the Night
The blowout win was the centerpiece of a festive Homecoming night at Tarleton State. The packed crowd at Memorial Stadium enjoyed a range of pregame activities, including a Bart Crow concert at Texan Alley and a parachute landing by Sgt. First Class Dana Bowman. Following the game, fans were treated to a postgame drone show featuring 250 drones displaying unique Tarleton State animations in the sky.
This marks the second consecutive season that Tarleton has shut out their Homecoming opponent with a 42-0 score, much to the delight of the Homecoming crowd.
Looking Ahead
With tonight’s dominant win, Tarleton improves to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in UAC play. The Texans have now won five straight games and 10 of their last 11 dating back to last season. Ranked No. 11 in the FCS Coaches Poll, Tarleton is firmly in the hunt for a conference title. They’ll enjoy a bye week before traveling to face Austin Peay on October 26 in what will be a crucial conference matchup.
Meanwhile, Utah Tech will return home in search of their first win of the season. The Trailblazers face Southern Utah next week, hoping to turn things around after a difficult start to the season
