SMU Volleyball Sweeps Clemson to Stay Perfect in ACC Play
The No. 23 SMU Mustangs volleyball team continued their strong start in ACC play with a dominant 3-0 sweep over the Clemson Tigers, improving their season record to 10-3 and maintaining an undefeated 2-0 record in conference play. The victory further extended SMU's win streak to five matches, with the Mustangs winning seven of their matches this season by sweeping their opponents.
A Milestone-Filled Match
SMU’s win over Clemson was not just another victory but also a milestone event for two standout players. Graduate setter Celia Cullen recorded her 4,000th career assist, a remarkable achievement that places her among the top setters in the ACC and the nation. Meanwhile, senior outside hitter Jamison Wheeler reached the 1,000-kill mark, further solidifying her status as one of SMU's most consistent offensive threats.
Cullen, who finished the match with 32 assists, 10 digs, and three blocks, continues to be the driving force behind SMU’s efficient offense. Wheeler added nine kills and three digs, playing a crucial role in maintaining the Mustangs’ offensive rhythm.
Dominating Clemson from Start to Finish
The Mustangs wasted no time establishing their dominance over Clemson, jumping out to a strong start in the opening set. With the score tied at 9-9 early on, SMU responded with a six-point run that set the tone for the remainder of the match. Clemson struggled to close the gap, and SMU claimed the first set 25-16, with Wheeler and Maya Tabron leading the way offensively. The Mustangs posted their highest kill total of the match in the first set, racking up 18 kills with contributions from several players.
SMU’s serving and defense were also critical in shutting down Clemson’s offense. The Mustangs recorded 10 aces in the match while holding Clemson to a meager .051 hitting percentage. Natalie Foster tied her season-high with five service aces, showcasing her ability to put pressure on Clemson’s back row. Defensively, SMU posted 10 blocks, with middle blockers Nnedi Okammor and Naya Shime combining for 10 total blocks to stifle the Tigers’ attack.
The second set was even more one-sided, as SMU raced out to an early 12-1 lead thanks to a 10-0 run sparked by Foster’s serving. Clemson attempted to rally with a few small runs in the middle of the set, but the Mustangs closed out the frame with a 6-0 run to win 25-10. Seven different Mustangs contributed kills in the second set, further showcasing the team’s depth and versatility.
Finishing the Sweep
In the third set, SMU continued to apply pressure, breaking open a close game with a 9-3 run that gave them control at 14-7. The Tigers fought to keep the match alive but couldn’t overcome SMU’s balanced attack and efficient play. The Mustangs hit a match-high .407 in the final set, displaying their most efficient offensive performance of the afternoon. With solid contributions from across the roster, including four kills from Okammor and five blocks from Shime, SMU finished the match with a decisive 25-16 set win to complete the sweep.

In addition to Cullen and Wheeler’s milestone achievements, SMU’s balanced offensive attack was on full display. Tabron led the Mustangs with 11 kills and added a team-high 14 digs, playing a crucial role on both sides of the ball. Shime chipped in with eight kills and five blocks, while Okammor contributed four kills and five blocks. The depth of the Mustangs’ roster has been a hallmark of their success this season, with several players stepping up to make key plays in crucial moments.
Cullen’s performance in particular stood out, as she continues to lead SMU’s offense with her precision passing and court awareness. Her 32 assists were instrumental in keeping Clemson off balance and spreading the ball to a variety of attackers.

With the victory over Clemson, SMU remains undefeated in ACC play and continues to build momentum in their first season in the conference. The Mustangs have now swept seven opponents this season, with three of those wins coming against ranked teams. Their ability to dominate in multiple facets of the game—serving, blocking, and attacking—has made them one of the toughest teams to beat in the ACC.
The Mustangs have now won the first set in 12 of their 13 matches this season, a testament to their strong starts and ability to take control of matches early.
