Longhorns Crush LSU in Baton Rouge: Texas Volleyball Remains Unbeaten in SEC
The No. 8 Texas Longhorns volleyball team solidified their strong start in Southeastern Conference (SEC) play with a commanding 3-0 sweep over the LSU Tigers on Sunday, securing their second consecutive SEC win. The match, held at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, ended with Texas taking the sets 25-20, 25-20, and 25-15. This victory extended Texas’ overall record to 7-3 and improved their conference record to 2-0.
Balanced Offense Leads the Charge
Texas demonstrated a well-balanced offensive approach throughout the match, with multiple players contributing to the scoreboard. Outside hitter Madisen Skinner led the Longhorns’ offense with 10 kills, setting the pace for the team's attacking success. Skinner’s efforts were complemented by standout performances from Reagan Rutherford and Jenna Wenaas, who each added seven kills to the tally.
The team’s ability to spread out the offense made it difficult for LSU to find an answer. Every set showcased the Longhorns’ depth and versatility, as Texas’ hitters capitalized on LSU’s defensive lapses.
Rutherford, in particular, made her presence known early in the match. In the first set, she delivered critical kills that helped Texas build a lead that LSU couldn’t overcome. The Longhorns jumped ahead 22-16 following a Skinner kill, and although LSU pushed back late, Texas closed the set at 25-20 with a kill from Marianna Singletary.
Kahahawai Dominates at the Net
A key factor in Texas’ dominance came from Devin Kahahawai, whose defensive presence was felt throughout the match. Kahahawai led the team with four block assists, disrupting LSU’s offense and preventing them from gaining any significant momentum. Additionally, Kahahawai contributed three service aces, proving her value in multiple aspects of the game.
Her impressive serving in the second set helped Texas pull ahead early, going on a pivotal 8-0 run that put the Longhorns up 12-3. From there, Texas maintained control and took the set 25-20, holding off a late surge from LSU. Kahahawai’s consistency on both sides of the ball highlighted Texas’ well-rounded gameplay.
Efficient Setting and Defensive Prowess
Texas also excelled in its distribution of the ball. Setters Averi Carlson and Ella Swindle combined for 33 assists, ensuring that the Longhorns’ attack remained unpredictable and effective. Carlson led with 17 assists, while Swindle added 16, each helping to set up crucial plays that kept the LSU defense on their heels.
On the defensive end, Emma Halter provided stability with a team-high eight digs. Halter’s quick reflexes and positioning played a key role in limiting LSU’s offensive opportunities. Her defensive performance, combined with her ability to contribute two service aces, showcased the Longhorns’ balance across all facets of the game.
Dominating the Third Set
Texas truly found their rhythm in the third and final set. After battling to a 10-10 tie early in the set, the Longhorns surged ahead with an 11-2 run that left LSU scrambling to recover. Texas controlled the tempo for the remainder of the set, cruising to a 25-15 victory to seal the match.
The Longhorns’ ability to turn a close set into a dominant win demonstrated their mental toughness and composure, traits that will be essential as the SEC season progresses. Texas’ strong finish was a testament to the team’s depth, focus, and ability to adjust when needed.
