A Close First Half
The game began with both teams trading baskets, with neither able to establish a clear advantage. Longwood capitalized on SMU’s early turnovers and strong offensive rebounding to keep the game tight. Elijah Tucker scored 20 points to lead the Lancers, and Coby Garland added 19 points and 11 assists, including a late jumper that tied the game at 43-43 with under a minute left in the first half.
However, SMU regained the lead just before halftime when Chuck Harris hit a buzzer-beating floater, giving the Mustangs a 45-43 edge heading into the break.
Second-Half Surge
The Mustangs seized control early in the second half, hitting 10 of their first 11 shots to go on a decisive 15-3 run. Traoire and Miller combined for key baskets, while Matt Cross knocked down a pair of three-pointers to extend SMU’s lead to 14 points.
Longwood mounted several attempts to rally, cutting the deficit to as few as seven points midway through the second half. A jumper from Tucker pulled the Lancers within 69-62 with just under 12 minutes remaining. However, SMU responded with a dominant 14-1 run, capped by a fastbreak dunk from Traoire that effectively sealed the game.
The Mustangs' defense also tightened, forcing contested shots and limiting Longwood’s opportunities from beyond the arc. Longwood finished 4 of 14 from three-point range, compared to SMU’s efficient 50% shooting from deep.
Key Performances
Boopie Miller’s 24-point performance marked his fourth 20-point game of the season, as the junior guard continued to establish himself as a key leader for the Mustangs. His ability to drive the lane and create opportunities for teammates was instrumental in SMU’s offensive success.
Yohan Traoire’s 20 points and 11 rebounds provided a strong interior presence for the Mustangs. His effort on both ends of the floor helped SMU control the paint and outrebound Longwood 33-30.
For Longwood, Elijah Tucker led the way with 20 points and six rebounds, while Coby Garland recorded his first career double-double with 19 points and 11 assists. Emanuel Richards chipped in 12 points off the bench, but the Lancers were unable to match SMU’s firepower in the second half.
SMU’s Momentum Heading into ACC Play
With the victory, SMU extended its winning streak to seven games, the longest since the 2021-22 season. The Mustangs have excelled in their transition to Atlantic Coast Conference play, posting a 2-0 record to start their inaugural ACC campaign.
