Georgia Tech Women’s Basketball Stays Undefeated with 100-61 Victory Over Pittsburgh
The No. 13 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets showcased their dominance on Sunday with a commanding 100-61 win over the Pittsburgh Panthers at McCamish Pavilion in Atlanta. This victory extended Georgia Tech’s undefeated season to 14-0 and marked their first 100-point game against an ACC opponent since 1991.
A Historic Performance
The Yellow Jackets, led by standout performances from Kara Dunn and Dani Carnegie, set multiple milestones in this victory. Dunn posted a season-high 28 points, hitting 10 of her 15 field goal attempts while adding seven rebounds. Carnegie, a freshman sensation, continued her impressive season with a career-high 24 points, including four three-pointers.
Chit-Chat Wright and Tonie Morgan also contributed double-digit scoring efforts, with Wright tallying 16 points and Morgan adding 15 points alongside eight assists. The Yellow Jackets shot an efficient 50.7% from the field and converted 12 three-pointers, showcasing their offensive versatility.
Dominance from the Start
Georgia Tech wasted no time asserting control, opening the game on a 7-0 run and building a double-digit lead within the first seven minutes. Dunn’s and-one play midway through the quarter gave the Yellow Jackets a commanding 24-14 advantage, and they closed the first quarter leading 31-18.
The second quarter saw Georgia Tech extend their dominance with a 15-4 run, fueled by Carnegie’s sharpshooting and Morgan’s court vision. The Yellow Jackets took a 53-28 lead into halftime, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Pittsburgh’s Bright Spot
Despite the lopsided result, Pittsburgh found a silver lining in the performance of graduate center Khadija Faye. Faye led the Panthers with 22 points and six rebounds, marking her seventh game this season with 20 or more points. Senior guard Brooklynn Miles added 11 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while junior guard Aislin Malcolm contributed 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
The Panthers struggled to protect the ball, committing 21 turnovers, which Georgia Tech converted into 28 points. Despite shooting a respectable 39.3% from the field and going a perfect 13-of-13 from the free-throw line, Pittsburgh’s inability to keep pace with Georgia Tech’s offensive firepower proved costly.
Second-Half Onslaught
Georgia Tech continued their offensive barrage in the second half, breaking the 30-point margin late in the third quarter on a Wright jumper that extended their lead to 73-43. The Yellow Jackets didn’t let up in the fourth, as Wright’s three-pointer and Gabbie Grooms’ jumper in the final minute pushed the team to the 100-point mark for the first time since 2015.
Celebrating 50 Years of Excellence
This victory was particularly special as it came during the 50th anniversary of Georgia Tech women’s basketball. The program, which began in 1974-75, has grown into a powerhouse under head coach Nell Fortner. With 14 wins to open the season, the Yellow Jackets have achieved the best start in program history, solidifying their place as one of the elite teams in the ACC.
Looking Ahead
Georgia Tech will look to maintain their perfect season when they host Syracuse on January 2. With Dunn, Carnegie, and Morgan leading the way, the Yellow Jackets appear poised to contend for an ACC title and make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
For Pittsburgh, the loss drops them to 8-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Panthers will aim to bounce back on January 5 when they face No. 14 Duke in Durham. Improving ball security and defensive consistency will be key areas of focus as they navigate the challenges of ACC competition.
A Statement Win
Georgia Tech’s 100-61 victory over Pittsburgh served as a reminder of their offensive prowess and defensive discipline. As the Yellow Jackets continue to break records and set new standards, their potential to make history in the ACC and beyond is undeniable.
For Pittsburgh, the game highlighted the need for growth and resilience as they face some of the toughest opponents in the nation. As both teams look ahead, the lessons learned from this matchup will shape their respective journeys in this highly competitive season.
