Miami and Georgia Drop in Recent AP Polls
In a shake-up of the college football landscape, the latest AP Top 25 poll reflects dramatic drops for both Miami and Georgia, following upset losses that have significantly impacted their College Football Playoff prospects. Oregon holds the top spot, retaining its place as the No. 1 team after a dominant victory over Maryland, while Ohio State and Texas have moved into the second and third positions, respectively.
The most notable changes, however, come further down in the rankings, with Georgia and Miami slipping out of the top ten. The Georgia Bulldogs fell from No. 2 to No. 11 after a 28-10 loss to No. 10 Ole Miss, while Miami’s 28-23 defeat at the hands of unranked Georgia Tech sent them from No. 4 down to No. 12.
Oregon Remains No. 1, Ohio State Climbs
Oregon’s 10-0 record and their status as the unanimous No. 1 team remain unchallenged. The Ducks have shown remarkable consistency, led by quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who broke the FBS all-time touchdowns record this season. Oregon’s 38-14 win over Maryland cemented its hold on the top position, and the Ducks appear well-poised to secure one of the four coveted College Football Playoff spots.
Behind Oregon, Ohio State advanced to No. 2 after a narrow victory over a ranked opponent. With only one loss, which came by a single point to Oregon, the Buckeyes’ solid performance positions them as a top contender in the Big Ten. The Texas Longhorns moved up two spots to No. 3 following a commanding win, solidifying their standing as the highest-ranked team from the SEC.
Georgia’s Stumble Against Ole Miss
Georgia’s tumble in the rankings is its most significant since 2020, when they last fell outside the top ten. The Bulldogs entered the game against Ole Miss as heavy favorites but struggled on both sides of the ball. Georgia’s offense, led by quarterback Carson Beck, failed to find a rhythm, while the Bulldogs’ defense, a traditionally strong unit, was unable to contain Ole Miss’ potent offense.
Ole Miss capitalized on three Georgia turnovers, with quarterback Jaxson Dart showcasing his skills both on the ground and in the air. Dart threw for 213 yards and added two touchdowns, propelling Ole Miss to the No. 10 position in the AP Poll and keeping their own playoff aspirations alive. The Rebels’ defense, which held Georgia to just ten points, also played a crucial role, marking one of the Bulldogs' lowest scoring outputs in recent memory.
The Bulldogs now face a must-win game against No. 6 Tennessee in Week 12 to keep their season on track. Tennessee, meanwhile, continued its strong run with a victory over Mississippi State, positioning itself as a key obstacle for Georgia’s return to the top ranks.
Miami Falls to Georgia Tech in ACC Upset
In another significant shake-up, Miami’s loss to Georgia Tech marks the first time this season that the Hurricanes have dropped out of the top ten. Entering the game as the ACC’s highest-ranked team, Miami’s defeat has jeopardized its bid for a playoff spot. The Hurricanes’ struggles against Georgia Tech were evident, with turnovers and missed opportunities defining the game.
Georgia Tech’s defense effectively contained Miami’s high-powered offense, capitalizing on an early fumble recovery and two interceptions. With Miami quarterback Cam Ward under constant pressure, the Hurricanes were limited to short yardage plays and had difficulty sustaining drives. Georgia Tech’s win, their second over a top-five team this season, not only brought them national attention but also further complicates Miami’s path to an ACC title.
This loss has placed Miami at No. 12, just below Georgia, in the updated rankings. Head coach Mario Cristobal has emphasized that the Hurricanes still control their fate within the ACC, but the drop in the AP rankings indicates that their path to the playoffs may require help from other teams faltering in the final weeks of the season.
Other Notable Rankings Movements
With Miami and Georgia out of the top ten, Indiana and BYU now find themselves in the top ranks. Indiana, undefeated at 10-0, moved into the No. 5 spot after defeating Michigan 20-15. This position represents Indiana’s highest ranking since the 1960s and underscores their impressive season. Despite skepticism regarding their strength of schedule, the Hoosiers have demonstrated resilience and consistency, maintaining a perfect record and a chance to make a playoff appearance if they continue their winning streak.
BYU, at No. 7, also remains undefeated after narrowly defeating Utah in a thrilling 22-21 finish. With only a few games remaining, the Cougars have the opportunity to secure their place in the top ten and possibly the playoffs, provided they continue to perform at this high level.
Texas A&M, ranked No. 15, and Alabama, now at No. 9, both climbed slightly in the rankings, setting up an intriguing SEC Championship picture. Texas A&M's and Alabama’s steady performances in the SEC add to the conference’s strength, which currently holds four of the top ten AP Poll positions.
The new rankings also saw teams like SMU and South Carolina enter the top 25, with SMU moving to No. 14 following a strong win, while South Carolina joined at No. 23 after defeating Vanderbilt. South Carolina’s climb has been a highlight, marking their first appearance in the Top 25 since the end of the 2022 season. Meanwhile, Tulane, led by first-year head coach Jon Sumrall, rounded out the rankings at No. 25 after winning seven straight games.
The Path Forward for Georgia and Miami
Georgia and Miami’s paths to a playoff spot have grown more complicated with these losses. While Georgia remains a strong contender, they must win their upcoming matchup against Tennessee to remain in the hunt. Miami, though still the top-ranked ACC team, now faces heightened competition within the conference, with Clemson and Louisville both eager to capitalize on Miami’s misstep.
For Georgia, securing a place in the SEC Championship is paramount, as a strong finish could help them climb back into playoff contention. Likewise, Miami’s position in the ACC standings remains favorable, but any further losses could jeopardize their season and leave them outside the top 12 by season’s end.
Both teams will need to regroup quickly, as the coming weeks will determine whether their seasons end in playoff glory or with the disappointment of a missed opportunity.
