Kansas Tops AP Top 25 Preseason Men's Basketball Poll Ahead of Alabama and UConn
The highly anticipated AP Top 25 preseason poll for the 2024-2025 men’s college basketball season has been released, with Kansas claiming the top spot for the second consecutive year. The Jayhawks earned 30 of the possible 60 first-place votes, cementing their place as the preseason favorite after a strong offseason of recruiting and transfers.
The AP Top 25 rankings feature a blend of familiar faces and emerging contenders, with perennial powerhouses like Alabama, UConn, and Duke filling out the top spots. However, Kansas stands out as the team to beat heading into the new season.
Kansas Jayhawks at No. 1
Kansas’ No. 1 ranking comes after a solid offseason where they strengthened their roster following last year’s 23-win campaign. Despite not making it past the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2024, head coach Bill Self’s squad is poised for a strong comeback this season.
The Jayhawks’ impressive transfer portal acquisitions include standout guards AJ Storr from Wisconsin, Rylan Griffen from Alabama, and Zeke Mayo from South Dakota State. Additionally, returning All-American big man Hunter Dickinson will anchor the team. With a combination of experienced transfers and talented freshmen, Kansas is well-equipped to challenge for a national title.
Kansas has now been ranked as the preseason No. 1 team five times under Self, further solidifying their place among college basketball’s elite programs.
Alabama and UConn Round Out the Top Three
Coming in at No. 2 is the Alabama Crimson Tide, who received 14 first-place votes. Alabama, led by guard Mark Sears, is expected to contend for both the SEC title and a deep NCAA Tournament run. After a successful 2023-2024 campaign, Alabama returns a core group of experienced players while also adding top recruits to their already talented roster.
Defending champion UConn, ranked No. 3 in the poll, looks to build on their remarkable back-to-back championship victories. Head coach Dan Hurley returns key contributors from last season, including Alex Karaban and Samson Johnson, while bringing in highly touted recruits like Liam McNeeley and Aidan Mahaney. Despite losing several top players to the NBA, UConn remains one of the most formidable teams in college basketball.
Hurley, who turned down an opportunity to coach in the NBA, is chasing a historic three-peat, which would make UConn only the second program in NCAA history to win three consecutive national titles.

Notable Teams and Surprises
Gonzaga, the powerhouse from the West Coast Conference, comes in at No. 6 and even earned one first-place vote. The Zags, led by head coach Mark Few, are poised for another successful season with a lineup that features Ryan Nembhard and Michael Ajayi. Gonzaga’s non-conference schedule will challenge them early, as they face No. 8 Baylor and No. 23 Kentucky within the first few weeks of the season.
North Carolina, a team that struggled with consistency last season, is ranked No. 9 in the preseason poll. The Tar Heels return several key players and are expected to make a deeper run in the NCAA Tournament this year after missing out on March Madness in 2024. Duke, ranked No. 7, continues to rebuild under head coach Jon Scheyer, who has managed to maintain the program's elite status following Coach K’s retirement.
Iowa State’s rise to No. 5 is one of the most intriguing storylines heading into the season. The Cyclones are coming off a strong year and have added several talented transfers to bolster their roster. Their presence in the top five, along with Kansas and Houston, highlights the depth and competitiveness of the Big 12.
Big 12 Dominates the Top Spots
The Big 12 conference continues to showcase its strength, with Kansas, Houston, and Iowa State all appearing in the top five. Baylor also joins the group at No. 8, solidifying the conference's reputation as the toughest league in college basketball. The addition of Arizona to the Big 12 further boosts the conference's talent pool, with the Wildcats coming in at No. 10.
Cincinnati, another newcomer to the Big 12, makes its first preseason appearance at No. 20. The Bearcats will face a challenging schedule as they adjust to their new conference, but with a deep roster and strong recruiting class, they are expected to be competitive.
SEC Contenders in the Top 25
The SEC is well-represented in the poll, with Alabama, Tennessee, Auburn, and Texas A&M all making the top 13. Alabama, in particular, is expected to challenge Kansas for the top spot as the season progresses, while Tennessee looks to bounce back from an inconsistent 2024 season. Auburn and Texas A&M both return experienced rosters and are expected to contend for the SEC title.
Florida (No. 21), Kentucky (No. 23), and Ole Miss (No. 24) round out the SEC teams in the rankings. Kentucky, a perennial power, has not garnered the same level of preseason hype as in past years but remains a threat with their young talent and a strong recruiting class.
Looking Ahead
As the 2024-2025 season tips off, college basketball fans can expect another thrilling year filled with surprises, upsets, and standout performances. Kansas, Alabama, and UConn are early favorites, but with such a deep talent pool across the top 25, the race for the national title is wide open.
