Cam Rising Out for Season, Future in Doubt for Utah Quarterback
Utah quarterback Cam Rising’s 2024 season has officially ended, and with it, questions about his future in football loom large. Rising, who has been plagued by season-ending injuries the past two to three seasons, may be nearing the end of his college career unless granted a medical redshirt. Once considered a highly promising NFL draft pick, his career has taken a sharp turn due to these recurring injuries.
Injury-Plagued Career
Cam Rising from Utah is out for the season, which could mean the end of his career unless he’s granted a medical redshirt. Unfortunately, his career, which was once very promising and projected to make him a high NFL draft pick, has been derailed by season-ending injuries over the past two or three seasons. Rising’s journey from rising star to injury-riddled quarterback has been difficult for both him and his team.
Rising had hoped to return this season after missing most of 2023 with a torn ACL suffered during the 2022 Rose Bowl. However, his 2024 campaign was cut short when a lower-leg injury sustained against Arizona State ruled him out for the rest of the year. This marks yet another disappointing chapter for a quarterback who had been seen as a future NFL prospect before injuries slowed his progress.
Impact on Utah’s Season
Without Rising for the majority of this season, Utah has struggled to find its footing. The team is 4-2 overall, with a 1-2 record in Big 12 play. His absence on the field has left a significant void in the Utes' offense, forcing Utah to rely on less experienced players. Many believe that if Rising had been able to play at full strength, Utah could have had a much more successful start to their season.
Rising briefly returned in Week 7 for Utah’s game against Arizona State, but he was clearly not himself, throwing three interceptions and completing just 43.2% of his passes in a 27-19 loss. His struggles during that game further emphasized the challenges he faces in recovering fully from his series of injuries.
With Rising now officially out for the season, Utah will turn to freshman Isaac Wilson to take over at quarterback. Wilson, the younger brother of Denver Broncos QB Zach Wilson, has shown potential but lacks the experience and leadership that Rising brought to the field. The Utes’ offense will now have to adjust to Wilson’s playing style as they look to navigate the remainder of their season without their veteran leader.
Medical Redshirt: A Glimmer of Hope
Given his injury history, there is still hope for Cam Rising to extend his college career through a medical redshirt. If granted, Rising could return for an additional season in 2025, allowing him time to fully recover and make another run at the NFL. Under NCAA guidelines, players are eligible for a medical redshirt if they participate in fewer than four games, meaning Rising qualifies.
However, the decision to pursue a medical redshirt is not a simple one. While it could provide Rising with a chance to rehabilitate his career and potentially increase his draft stock, the risk of further injury could make him think twice about continuing his playing career.
NFL Future in Jeopardy
At his peak, Cam Rising was seen as a dual-threat quarterback with significant NFL potential. His ability to make plays with both his arm and his legs made him a tantalizing prospect for NFL scouts. However, with back-to-back-to-back seasons ending in injury, his durability has now become a significant concern for professional teams.
NFL teams prize consistency and durability in their quarterbacks, and Rising’s injury history may be a red flag that causes his draft stock to plummet. For players with a history of recurring injuries, the NFL presents even greater risks due to the more physical and fast-paced nature of the game. While some teams may still be willing to take a chance on his raw talent, others may pass due to the uncertainty surrounding his ability to stay healthy.
What’s Next for Utah?
As Utah moves forward without Rising, they will need to rally around freshman Isaac Wilson as their new starting quarterback. While Wilson has potential, he will need time to develop, and Utah’s coaching staff will have to adjust their game plan to play to his strengths while avoiding costly mistakes.
The Utes’ season is still very much in progress, but the loss of Rising will undoubtedly make it more difficult for them to compete at the highest level in the Big 12. Their defense and running game will need to carry more of the load as Wilson continues to gain experience and confidence.
Despite the challenges, Utah is still capable of finishing strong in the Big 12, but their chances of making a deep postseason run are greatly diminished without their veteran quarterback leading the way.
