Idaho Outlasts ACU in a Thrilling FCS Showdown
In a clash of two nationally ranked FCS programs, No. 4 Idaho held off a late surge from No. 25 Abilene Christian University (ACU) to secure a 27-24 victory at Wildcat Stadium on Saturday night. This marked ACU's first-ever ranking as a Division I team, adding historical significance to their season. Despite a slow start, ACU mounted a furious fourth-quarter comeback, but a late fumble in the final minute sealed their fate in a game that showcased both teams' grit and determination.
Idaho's Hot Start
Idaho came out of the gate strong, jumping to a 20-3 halftime lead behind the arm of quarterback Jack Wagner. Wagner threw two first-quarter touchdown passes, including a 44-yard strike to Mark Hamper on a trick play. The Vandals continued to dominate offensively, racking up 253 total yards by halftime, compared to just 104 from the Wildcats.
Idaho's defense played a pivotal role early, intercepting ACU quarterback Maverick McIvor on the Wildcats' first drive and limiting ACU to a single field goal in the first half. The Vandals extended their lead early in the third quarter, with a 3-yard touchdown run by Nate Thomas making it 27-3.
ACU's Late Surge
The Wildcats struggled to find their rhythm for most of the game, but in the final quarter, they came alive. McIvor led three consecutive scoring drives, beginning with a five-yard touchdown pass to J.J. Henry late in the third quarter, cutting Idaho’s lead to 27-11. On their next possession, McIvor connected with Nehemiah Martinez for a 23-yard touchdown pass, bringing the Wildcats within 10 points.
With just under four minutes left in the game, ACU’s Isaiah Johnson punched in a one-yard touchdown run, narrowing Idaho's lead to 27-24. The Wildcats' defense stepped up, forcing a punt from Idaho to give ACU one last chance with just under a minute remaining.
The Fumble That Sealed the Game
ACU’s final drive appeared promising as McIvor connected on a 21-yard pass and Idaho was penalized for a late hit, bringing the Wildcats close to field goal range. But on a crucial third-and-10 play, McIvor scrambled for what looked like a first down but was stripped of the ball by Idaho’s Zach Krotzer. The fumble was recovered by Matt Irwin, ending the Wildcats’ comeback hopes.
McIvor finished the night 26 of 46 for 288 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Isaiah Johnson added 59 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Martinez had five catches for 52 yards and a score.
Looking Ahead
For Idaho, this victory moves them to 3-1 on the season and further solidifies their standing as a top FCS team. The Vandals will face UC Davis next week in a Big Sky Conference matchup.
ACU, now 2-2, will look to regroup as they prepare for an away game against Utah Tech next Saturday. Despite the loss, the Wildcats showed resilience, and they’ll need to carry that momentum into the remainder of their schedule.
