Colorado Defeats Baylor in Overtime After Dramatic Hail Mary from Shedeur Sanders
In a thrilling Big 12 matchup, Colorado pulled off a 38-31 overtime victory against Baylor, fueled by a last-second Hail Mary from quarterback Shedeur Sanders to tie the game in regulation. The Buffaloes then completed the dramatic comeback with a defensive stand in overtime, giving Colorado their first Big 12 win since rejoining the conference.
The Miracle Play: Sanders’ Hail Mary
With Colorado trailing 31-24 late in the fourth quarter, it appeared Baylor was on the verge of sealing the victory. However, when Baylor missed a key field goal, Colorado had one final chance. After a near-miss on a deep pass, Sanders scrambled left and launched a 43-yard Hail Mary pass into the end zone. Wide receiver LaJohntay Wester managed to pull in the catch, tying the game as time expired and sending the contest into overtime.
The miracle throw was reminiscent of Colorado’s famous 1994 last-second touchdown, adding another chapter to the team’s history of dramatic finishes.
Overtime Heroics and Defensive Stand
In overtime, Colorado struck first with a 1-yard touchdown run by Micah Welch, giving them a 38-31 lead. Baylor quickly responded, marching down the field. However, as Baylor running back Dominic Richardson approached the goal line, Colorado’s two-way star Travis Hunter delivered a game-saving hit, forcing a fumble that secured the win.
After the fumble was confirmed on review, the Buffaloes’ fans flooded the field in celebration, marking one of the most memorable wins in recent history for the program.
Baylor’s Big Plays Come Up Short
Despite the loss, Baylor made several notable plays during the game. The Bears had a 100-yard kickoff return and a 45-yard touchdown run that helped them maintain control for much of the game. A spectacular one-handed touchdown catch in the fourth quarter had put Baylor ahead 31-24 before the late-game drama unfolded.
While Baylor’s defense kept the pressure on Sanders with eight sacks, the Buffaloes’ offensive resilience ultimately turned the tide in Colorado’s favor.
Travis Hunter Shines on Both Sides of the Ball
Travis Hunter once again proved his importance to Colorado’s success. Not only did he record seven catches for 130 yards as a receiver, but his performance on defense, including the game-saving forced fumble in overtime, demonstrated his versatility and playmaking ability.
Hunter’s contributions on both sides of the ball have placed him among the top performers in college football this season, further elevating his profile in the Heisman Trophy race.
Looking Ahead
The victory brings Colorado’s record to 3-1 as they prepare for their next game against UCF. Baylor, now 2-2, will need to regroup before facing BYU. Despite some struggles, particularly on special teams, Colorado’s ability to persevere in high-pressure moments has made them a team to watch as the season progresses.
