Wisconsin Volleyball Sweeps Indiana 3-0, Extends Winning Streak
The Wisconsin Badgers continued their dominance on the volleyball court, sweeping the Indiana Hoosiers in a decisive 3-0 victory tonight at Wilkinson Hall. Wisconsin’s powerful attack, combined with their formidable defense, overwhelmed the Hoosiers, marking the Badgers’ eighth consecutive victory.
Wisconsin’s Dominant Start
Wisconsin came out of the gates with intensity, but the first set didn’t start as smoothly as they would have liked. The Badgers committed a few service errors early, allowing Indiana to keep the match close. Indiana, despite missing key players like All-American setter Camryn Haworth and junior opposite hitter Avry Tatum, managed to tie the game at 9-9. However, the Badgers quickly regrouped and seized control of the set.
Led by their star outside hitter Sarah Franklin, who finished the match with 15 kills, Wisconsin found their rhythm and maintained control. The Badgers pulled ahead late in the first set, winning 25-23. Franklin’s sharp attacks were complemented by solid contributions from Anna Smrek, who added 10 kills, and the always-reliable Caroline Crawford, who anchored the front row with her stellar blocking.
Badgers’ Defense Shines in the Second Set
The second set saw Wisconsin’s defensive unit take center stage. Known for their formidable blocking ability, the Badgers showed why they’re one of the most feared defensive teams in the Big Ten. Crawford, who reached the 600-career-block milestone during tonight’s match, and Smrek made life difficult for Indiana’s hitters. Indiana’s offense struggled to find any consistency, and their hitting percentage plummeted.
Indiana made a brief run, closing the gap to within three points, but Wisconsin’s composure and depth proved too much for the shorthanded Hoosiers. Senior libero Lola Schumacher, playing in her home state of Indiana, was a standout on the defensive end, recording 20 digs and making key plays to keep Indiana’s offense at bay. Setter Charlie Fuerbringer orchestrated a balanced attack, adding an ace and distributing the ball effectively to Wisconsin’s hitters.
The Badgers won the second set comfortably, 25-18, and looked well on their way to another straight-set victory. The defense held Indiana to a low hitting percentage, while the Badgers hit .474 combined over the second and third sets, showcasing their efficiency on offense.
Third Set Blowout Caps Dominant Night
Wisconsin wasted no time in the third set, quickly jumping out to a 7-0 lead. The Badgers' offense was firing on all cylinders, with Franklin, Smrek, and Crawford delivering one powerful kill after another. Indiana, already hampered by injuries, could not recover from the early deficit. Wisconsin’s defense continued to frustrate Indiana, holding the Hoosiers to a .000 hitting percentage in the final set.
The Badgers’ balanced attack was once again on display, with multiple players contributing to the final push. Anna Smrek, at 6'9", proved to be a near-unstoppable force at the net, both offensively and defensively. Freshman setter Fuerbringer continued to shine, providing the team with consistency and poise beyond her years.
Wisconsin closed out the match with a resounding 25-13 victory in the third set, completing the 3-0 sweep. It was yet another clinical performance from a team that has been nearly unbeatable this season. Tonight’s victory extended the Badgers' winning streak to eight matches, and they have now lost only one set in their last eight games.
Head Coach Kelly Sheffield Makes History
Tonight’s win was particularly special for Wisconsin head coach Kelly Sheffield, who secured his 306th career victory, making him the all-time winningest coach in Wisconsin volleyball history. Sheffield, who has transformed the Badgers into a national powerhouse, has built a culture of excellence in Madison, and his influence on the program is undeniable.
With a team as talented and deep as this year’s squad, Sheffield’s ability to get the most out of his players has been a key factor in Wisconsin’s sustained success. Tonight’s victory was a testament to his leadership and the hard work of his players, who continue to raise the bar with each match.
Indiana’s Injuries Prove Costly
For Indiana, the loss marks their fifth straight defeat in Big Ten play. The Hoosiers, who have been dealing with significant injuries, including the absence of their star setter Camryn Haworth, struggled to find any rhythm on offense. Haworth’s absence forced Indiana to shuffle their lineup, with graduate student Delaynie Maple stepping in to fill the role. Maple finished with eight kills, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Wisconsin’s dominance.
Despite the lopsided score, Indiana had bright spots, particularly behind the service line. The Hoosiers recorded more aces and committed fewer errors than Wisconsin, but their struggles at the net and inconsistent attacking proved to be their downfall.
Looking Ahead for Wisconsin and Indiana
With this victory, Wisconsin improves to 17-1 on the season and remains one of the favorites to win the Big Ten title. The Badgers will face two top-10 opponents in the coming week, with matchups against No. 10 Purdue and long-time rival No. 2 Nebraska. These matches will be critical for Wisconsin as they continue their pursuit of a Big Ten championship and a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Indiana, on the other hand, will look to regroup as they prepare to host Northwestern in their next match. Head coach Steve Aird remains hopeful that his team can bounce back, especially once key players like Haworth and Tatum return to the lineup. The second half of Big Ten play will be crucial for Indiana as they try to climb out of their current slump and finish the season on a high note.
