Virginia Tech Holds Off Florida State for 76-66 Victory
Hokies Secure Wire-to-Wire Win on the Road
Virginia Tech men’s basketball secured a crucial 76-66 road win over Florida State on Wednesday night at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. The Hokies never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a big first-half lead and holding off a late Florida State rally. The victory improved Virginia Tech’s record to 9-12 overall and 4-6 in ACC play, while Florida State fell to 13-8 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
Tobi Lawal led the Hokies with a dominant performance, recording 17 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Jaden Schutt added 16 points, while Ben Burnham provided a spark with key plays in the paint. Virginia Tech’s defensive effort and efficient shooting proved to be the difference, as they maintained control for most of the game.
Hokies Set the Tone Early
Virginia Tech wasted no time establishing control, opening the game with a strong defensive stand and efficient shooting. After an early exchange of baskets, Lawal’s second field goal gave the Hokies a 4-2 lead, and they never looked back.
Rodney Brown Jr.’s layup with 9:54 remaining in the first half extended Virginia Tech’s led to 20-9. The Hokies continued to apply pressure, pushing their advantage to 25-11 after a highlight dunk by Burnham. The first-half dominance continued as Virginia Tech closed on a 10-4 run, taking a commanding 35-15 lead into halftime.
Florida State struggled to find offensive rhythm, managing just 15 first-half points—its lowest total in a half this season. The Seminoles shot just 30% from the field in the opening period and were held to a single three-pointer.
Florida State’s Second-Half Rally Falls Short
The Seminoles came out of the locker room with renewed energy, finally reaching the 20-point mark on a three-pointer by Taylor Bol Bowen two-and-a-half minutes into the second half. Florida State then chipped away at Virginia Tech’s lead, using a methodical seven-minute stretch to cut the deficit to 49-43 on a layup by Daquan Davis with 8:08 left to play.
Just as Florida State appeared to be closing in, Virginia Tech responded with a clutch sequence. Ben Hammond, Schutt, and Lawal knocked down three-pointers in succession, quickly stretching the lead back to 58-45. The Hokies continued to execute offensively, maintaining a double-digit lead until the final minutes.
Alier Maluk’s dunk brought Florida State within single digits at 61-52 with 4:09 remaining, but the Seminoles never got closer. Virginia Tech closed out the game with strong free-throw shooting and key defensive stops, securing their second road win in ACC play.
Key Performances Propel Virginia Tech
Lawal’s 17-point, 13-rebound effort anchored Virginia Tech on both ends of the floor. His inside presence allowed the Hokies to control the boards, while his scoring provided consistent production in the paint.
Schutt’s 16 points included several timely three-pointers that kept Florida State at bay. His ability to stretch the defense opened driving lanes for his teammates.
Burnham’s impact was felt in crucial moments, as he added physicality and energy that helped Virginia Tech maintain control even when Florida State made its run.
For the Seminoles, Bol Bowen led the way with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, finishing just one rebound shy of a double-double. Reserve forward Jerry Deng contributed 13 points off the bench, but Florida State’s slow start proved too much to overcome.
Defensive Execution and Rebounding Edge
Virginia Tech’s defensive effort in the first half was the difference-maker. Holding Florida State to just 15 points in the opening period, the Hokies controlled the tempo and disrupted the Seminoles’ offensive flow.
On the boards, Virginia Tech outrebounded Florida State 39-30, creating second-chance opportunities that extended possessions. Their ability to dominate inside forced Florida State into difficult shot attempts throughout the night.
Virginia Tech also shot efficiently from beyond the arc, hitting 9-of-21 three-pointers compared to Florida State’s 5-of-20. The Hokies’ ability to knock down key shots in the second half helped them maintain separation even as Florida State attempted a comeback.
Looking Ahead
Virginia Tech will look to build on this victory as they prepare for a road matchup against Virginia on Saturday. The game marks the first meeting of the season in the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash, a rivalry that has produced several competitive battles in recent years.
Florida State will return home to face Boston College on Saturday, hoping to rebound from this loss and regain momentum in ACC play. The Seminoles will need to improve their offensive efficiency and avoid another slow start if they hope to get back in the win column.
A Statement Win for the Hokies
Virginia Tech’s ability to control the game from start to finish demonstrated their potential in ACC play. Their strong defensive start, dominant rebounding, and clutch shooting in key moments secured a well-earned victory on the road.
For Florida State, the loss highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in their early-game execution. The Seminoles showed resilience in the second half but were unable to recover from their first-half struggles.
As both teams move forward in conference play, this matchup serves as a reminder of the importance of consistency and execution in the highly competitive ACC.
