Texas State Cruises Past Arkansas State with 41-9 Victory
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Tonight, the Texas State Bobcats secured a commanding 41-9 victory over the Arkansas State Red Wolves at a packed UFCU Stadium, improving to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in Sun Belt Conference play. Under the leadership of quarterback Jordan McCloud, who threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns, the Bobcats dominated from start to finish, never trailing after the first quarter.
First-Half Surge by Texas State
Arkansas State managed to score first with a field goal early in the first quarter, but Texas State quickly took control of the game. On their opening drive, McCloud connected with wide receiver Kole Wilson for a 53-yard touchdown, giving the Bobcats a 7-3 lead. Moments later, McCloud added a 5-yard rushing touchdown, extending the lead to 14-3 by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter brought more offensive firepower for Texas State, with McCloud finding Jaden Williams for a 25-yard touchdown, further widening the gap to 21-3. Running back Ismail Mahdi kept the momentum going, racking up 164 rushing yards on 17 carries, allowing Texas State to maintain control of the tempo throughout the game. By halftime, Texas State had a comfortable lead, and their offensive balance had worn down Arkansas State’s defense.
Second-Half Dominance
After the break, Texas State showed no signs of letting up. McCloud connected twice with wide receiver Joey Hobert—first for a 30-yard touchdown, then for an 8-yard score. Hobert ended the night with 101 receiving yards on 10 catches, capping another stellar performance. By the end of the third quarter, Texas State had built an insurmountable 41-9 lead.
Arkansas State’s offensive struggles continued throughout the second half. While quarterback Jaylen Raynor managed 207 passing yards and running back Ja’Quez Cross added 117 rushing yards, the Red Wolves couldn’t find the end zone. They were limited to three field goals over the course of the game, thanks to Texas State’s stifling defense.
Total Team Effort Leads to Victory
Texas State’s offense was clicking on all cylinders tonight, with McCloud leading a balanced attack. He completed 24 of 29 passes, throwing four touchdowns and adding another on the ground. Mahdi’s dominant running complemented McCloud’s efficiency, giving the Bobcats 591 yards of total offense—their second 500-yard game this season.
The Bobcats' defense was equally impressive, holding Arkansas State to just 267 total yards and keeping them out of the end zone. Texas State’s defense came up big when it mattered, preventing any significant momentum for Arkansas State.
What set Texas State apart tonight was their ability to make the most of every offensive possession. While Arkansas State struggled to sustain drives, the Bobcats were relentless, converting on third downs and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. This efficiency was key to maintaining control of the game, allowing Texas State to dominate in both time of possession and field position.
Arkansas State’s Struggles
For Arkansas State, tonight’s game exposed some weaknesses. While Raynor and Cross showed flashes of brilliance, the Red Wolves couldn't convert their drives into touchdowns. Three of their drives ended in field goals, and they struggled to get into scoring position, thanks to a relentless Bobcats defense that didn’t allow any major breakthroughs.
Defensively, Arkansas State had trouble containing Texas State’s multi-faceted offense. McCloud’s precise passing and Mahdi’s powerful rushing consistently broke through their defense, and the Red Wolves had no answers.
Looking Ahead
Texas State’s victory solidifies their place as a contender in the Sun Belt Conference, with a 2-0 conference record and four wins overall. The Bobcats have won six of their last eight games, dating back to last season, and their offense is hitting its stride. They will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to face Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia, on October 19.
Arkansas State, now 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Sun Belt, will return home and try to regroup for their next matchup. Tonight’s loss highlights the Red Wolves' ongoing struggles on both sides of the ball, and they’ll need to adjust quickly to stay competitive in the conference.
