SMU Tops UNC Greensboro 81-68, Extending Unbeaten Streak
The SMU Mustangs continued their strong start to the season with a decisive 81-68 victory over the UNC Greensboro Spartans on Monday night at Moody Coliseum. With this win, SMU improved to 3-0, showcasing their balanced scoring and high-energy defense under the leadership of head coach Andy Enfield.
Strong Opening for SMU
SMU took control of the game early with a 14-2 run after UNC Greensboro scored the opening points. The Mustangs quickly adjusted, with guard Boopie Miller setting the tone by scoring both inside and from beyond the arc. SMU’s aggressive play saw them jump to a 14-7 lead just over five minutes into the game. UNC Greensboro countered with a brief scoring run of their own, taking a short-lived 21-19 lead midway through the first half. However, SMU quickly reclaimed control and built a six-point halftime lead at 41-35.
The Mustangs’ strong offensive showing in the first half was fueled by multiple players, including Miller and B.J. Edwards, who each finished the game with double-digit points. SMU's offensive efficiency and defensive intensity set the foundation for their victory, with Miller leading the team in assists and contributing significantly on both ends of the floor.
Second Half Surge
In the second half, SMU intensified its play, widening their lead to double digits. Miller, who scored 13 of his 21 points in the second half, was pivotal in keeping SMU ahead. Following an unusual five-minute period in which all scoring came from free throws, UNC Greensboro narrowed the gap to 65-54 with a dunk from Malik Henry. However, SMU responded with a scoring run that would ultimately secure their lead for the remainder of the game.
The Mustangs continued to pressure UNC Greensboro with fast breaks and points off turnovers. B.J. Edwards scored 17 points, including a crucial three-pointer that pushed SMU’s lead to 78-59 in the game’s closing minutes. Edwards’ consistent play and SMU’s well-rounded performance left UNC Greensboro struggling to close the deficit.
Key Performers for SMU
Boopie Miller led SMU with 21 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. His playmaking ability was instrumental in SMU’s ability to break through UNC Greensboro’s defense. Edwards followed with 17 points, displaying efficiency and defensive skills that contributed to the team’s success. Both players have been consistent for SMU through the first three games of the season.
Center Samet Yiğitoğlu, making his debut, was another standout for SMU, finishing with 13 points and four rebounds. Yiğitoğlu’s presence in the paint gave the Mustangs an advantage in the post, while his versatility added a new layer to SMU's offense.
Defensive Strength and Ball Control
The Mustangs demonstrated impressive defensive skills, outmatching UNC Greensboro with nine steals and converting several turnovers into fast-break points. SMU’s active defense limited UNC Greensboro’s chances in the paint, with the Mustangs outscoring them 34-28 in that area. Additionally, SMU took advantage of second-chance opportunities, scoring 16 points off offensive rebounds compared to just six by the Spartans.
Throughout the game, SMU maintained control of the pace and displayed superior ball movement, finishing with a higher field goal percentage (42.9%) than UNC Greensboro. With SMU’s consistent execution on offense and their defensive prowess, they were able to sustain the double-digit lead and fend off any comeback attempts by the Spartans.
