SMU Opens Enfield Era with a Commanding 96-62 Victory Over Tarleton State
SMU men’s basketball began its new era under head coach Andy Enfield with a dominant 96-62 win over Tarleton State in their home opener at Moody Coliseum. Marking their debut in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), the Mustangs showcased a well-rounded and aggressive performance, setting the tone for the season ahead.
A Fast Start and Total Team Effort
SMU wasted no time establishing control, overcoming a brief 5-0 Tarleton State lead to dominate the remainder of the game. The Mustangs exploded on a 22-0 run midway through the first half, turning a close contest into a lopsided affair. By the time the first half ended, SMU held a commanding 51-28 advantage, shooting an impressive 59% from the field and 50% from three-point range.
The Mustangs’ relentless pace and efficient offense proved too much for the Texans to handle. SMU outscored Tarleton 27-7 over a critical stretch, with standout moments including a dunk by B.J. Edwards that capped a 30-point lead late in the first half. SMU's defense also shined, forcing 23 turnovers and outscoring Tarleton in fast break points and points off turnovers.
Standout Performances
Boopie Miller, a transfer from Wake Forest, led SMU with a stellar debut performance. Miller scored 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting and added seven assists, four steals, and plenty of energy. His aggressive play and ability to facilitate the offense were key factors in the Mustangs' success.
Kario Oquendo and Chuck Harris, who combined for 32 points, each scored 16, providing additional firepower for SMU. Harris was particularly effective in the first half, scoring 12 points, while Oquendo’s versatility was on full display. B.J. Edwards and Keon Ambrose-Hylton also made significant contributions, scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively. Ambrose-Hylton, one of the few returning players, played a pivotal role as a stabilizing force for the largely new roster.
With six players scoring in double figures, SMU displayed impressive depth and balance. The last time the Mustangs had six players in double-digit scoring was in December 2015, and their offensive cohesion was a promising sign for their ACC campaign.
Tarleton’s Struggles and Bright Spots
Despite the lopsided score, Tarleton State had moments of resilience. Sophomore Bubu Benjamin was a standout, scoring a career-high 21 points. Benjamin was highly effective at the free-throw line, converting 14-of-16 attempts, and added four rebounds and three assists. His performance kept the Texans within striking distance early on.
Matt Krass provided a spark off the bench for Tarleton, scoring 10 points, including two three-pointers. However, the Texans struggled to find consistency on offense, shooting just 37% from the field. Turnovers and SMU's defensive pressure hindered their efforts, with Tarleton unable to recover from SMU's early scoring runs.
Key Stats and Game Analysis
SMU outperformed Tarleton in nearly every statistical category. The Mustangs shot 54% from the field and 42% from three-point range, while the Texans managed only 37% shooting overall. SMU also controlled the boards, out-rebounding Tarleton 35-29, and capitalized on turnovers, scoring 28 points off the Texans’ 23 giveaways.
Both teams were efficient from the free-throw line, with SMU shooting a perfect 11-for-11 and Tarleton hitting 93% of their attempts. However, the Texans’ inability to convert field goals consistently kept them from mounting a serious comeback.
The Enfield Impact
Monday night marked Andy Enfield’s first game as SMU’s head coach after a successful 11-year tenure at USC. Enfield, known for his fast-paced offensive style and disciplined defense, had his team playing with high energy and precision. The Mustangs’ strong start to the season is a testament to Enfield’s impact and the revamped roster he has assembled.
This year’s SMU team features nine new players, including seven transfers, making cohesion and team chemistry crucial. Enfield praised the collective effort and the players' ability to adapt quickly to his system. The Mustangs’ up-tempo play and defensive tenacity were evident, and the team’s ability to maintain a high level of performance throughout the game bodes well for the rest of the season.
Looking Ahead
With the victory, SMU extends its streak to 13 straight undefeated home openers. The Mustangs will next face Florida A&M on November 7, aiming to build on their momentum with a string of home games. This will be a crucial period for SMU as they continue to integrate new players and solidify their playing style under Enfield.
Tarleton State, now 0-1, will look to bounce back when they host Sam Houston on November 9. Despite the tough loss, the Texans have promising players like Benjamin who can make an impact as the season progresses. Head coach Billy Gillispie will aim to address the team’s defensive lapses and turnover issues ahead of their home opener.
Final Thoughts
SMU's commanding win over Tarleton State is a strong start to the Enfield era and their journey in the ACC. With standout performances, a deep roster, and a proven coach, the Mustangs have set a high bar for the season. As they continue to develop chemistry and refine their game, SMU fans have plenty to be excited about.
