SMU Dominates Stanford in Commanding Victory
Today at Stanford Stadium, the SMU Mustangs made a bold statement, securing a decisive win over the Stanford Cardinal in a 40-10 blowout. With this victory, SMU improves to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in ACC play, solidifying their position as a top contender in the conference. Quarterback Kevin Jennings led the charge, throwing for 322 yards and three touchdowns, as the Mustangs were in control from start to finish. This win also makes SMU bowl eligible for the sixth consecutive season, continuing their impressive run under head coach Rhett Lashlee.
Jennings Sets the Pace Early
It didn’t take long for SMU to make their presence known. On the very first play from scrimmage, Jennings connected with Moochie Dixon for a stunning 87-yard touchdown, giving SMU an immediate 7-0 lead with just 14:41 left in the first quarter. The explosive start set the tone for what would be a dominant offensive performance from the Mustangs.
Jennings wasn’t done yet. Before the first quarter was over, he had already thrown two more touchdowns—a 45-yard strike to Key'Shawn Smith and a 38-yard touchdown to RJ Maryland. By the end of the first quarter, SMU held a commanding 21-0 lead, with Jennings totaling 205 passing yards and three touchdowns. Stanford's defense was overwhelmed by SMU’s high-octane offense, and Jennings finished the day completing 17 of 27 passes with just one interception.
Stanford Struggles to Respond
While SMU thrived, Stanford couldn’t get out of its own way. The Cardinal, now 2-5 overall and 1-3 in ACC play, entered today’s game looking to snap a losing streak at home, but their offense failed to find its rhythm. Starting quarterback Ashton Daniels was replaced early in the first quarter, with freshman Elijah Brown stepping in to try and turn things around.
Brown managed to throw for 153 yards and one touchdown, a 2-yard pass to Elic Ayomanor that cut the deficit to 21-7 in the second quarter. However, that was the only offensive spark Stanford could muster as SMU’s defense continued to dominate. Stanford’s run game was practically nonexistent, with the team rushing for just 33 yards on the day. Brown also threw two interceptions, one of which led to a safety in the fourth quarter.
SMU’s Balanced Attack
The Mustangs displayed balance in their offensive attack, with both the passing and running games thriving throughout the day. Brashard Smith led the way on the ground, rushing for 67 yards on eight carries, while running back LJ Johnson Jr. added two touchdowns, including a 5-yard score late in the second quarter that pushed SMU’s lead to 28-7.
Jennings’ performance was complemented by an efficient run game that helped control the tempo throughout the matchup. SMU’s offensive line did an excellent job protecting the quarterback and creating running lanes, allowing the team to dominate the time of possession and wear down Stanford’s defense. With each passing drive, the Mustangs appeared more in sync, showcasing their ability to strike both quickly and methodically. This balance will be key as SMU continues to face tougher competition in the coming weeks.
SMU finished the game with 501 total yards of offense compared to Stanford’s 205. The Mustangs’ ability to control both the clock and the tempo of the game was evident, as they imposed their will on the Cardinal from start to finish.
Defense and Special Teams Shine
SMU’s defense played a crucial role in the victory. Cale Sanders Jr. recorded a key sack in the fourth quarter that resulted in a safety, while Deuce Harmon added an interception to keep Stanford’s offense in check. The Mustangs forced two turnovers and limited the Cardinal to just one offensive touchdown.
On special teams, kicker Collin Rogers made a 51-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, extending SMU’s lead to 31-7. Rogers’ clutch kicking and SMU’s field position control helped the Mustangs keep Stanford out of striking distance throughout the game.
What’s Next for SMU?
With today’s win, SMU continues to build momentum as they push for a spot in the ACC title game. The Mustangs now turn their attention to next week’s matchup against Duke, where they’ll look to extend their four-game winning streak. Jennings and the SMU offense are firing on all cylinders, and they’ll aim to carry that form into the coming weeks.
Stanford, meanwhile, faces a tough road ahead. The Cardinal has now lost four straight games and remains winless at home against FBS opponents under coach Troy Taylor. Stanford will need to regroup quickly, with several challenging games still on the horizon.
