Pitt Stuns SMU in 58-57 Thriller Behind Khadija Faye’s Historic Night
A Nail-Biting Finish at Moody Coliseum
The Pittsburgh Panthers delivered a stunning 58-57 victory over the SMU Mustangs on Sunday evening at Moody Coliseum. The tightly contested matchup came down to the final seconds, with Pitt’s defense stepping up to secure the win. Graduate center Khadija Faye had a dominant performance, recording 22 points and a career-high 17 rebounds while also surpassing the 1,000-career point milestone. This crucial road victory improved Pitt’s record to 11-14 (3-9 ACC) and marked the first time the Panthers have recorded back-to-back ACC wins since the 2022-23 season.
A Back-and-Forth Battle in Dallas
The game started with Pitt taking an early 8-4 lead behind key baskets from Faye, MaKayla Elmore, and Mikayla Johnson. However, SMU quickly responded, leveling the game before Elmore’s free throws gave Pitt a 10-8 advantage. The Mustangs managed a late first-quarter surge and led 13-12 after the opening ten minutes.
Pitt opened the second quarter aggressively, outscoring SMU 10-4 in the first four minutes to claim a 22-17 lead. The Mustangs again answered back, using a 7-2 run to tie the game at 24. With just over two minutes left in the first half, Faye drilled a mid-range jumper to surpass the 1,000-point career mark, igniting a 9-3 run that gave Pitt a 33-27 halftime lead.
Panthers Maintain Control Despite SMU’s Late Push
The Panthers extended their lead early in the second half with key baskets from Faye and Elmore. Pitt held a steady advantage throughout the third quarter, leading 47-38 entering the final period. Both teams struggled to find a consistent rhythm, trading baskets in a low-scoring quarter.
As the fourth quarter progressed, SMU turned up the intensity. The Mustangs went on a 5-1 run to cut Pitt’s lead to two points with just over two minutes remaining. With 35 seconds left, TK Pitts sank a jumper to give SMU its first lead of the second half at 57-56.
However, the Panthers responded quickly. Mikayla Johnson calmly knocked down two free throws with 26 seconds remaining to put Pitt back in front 58-57. SMU had one last opportunity to reclaim the lead, but Pitt’s defense stood tall, blocking two shot attempts in the final seconds to secure the victory.
Key Performances
Faye’s incredible night was the highlight for Pitt, as she not only led in scoring and rebounding but also played a pivotal role in keeping the Panthers in control for most of the game. Senior forward MaKayla Elmore had an impressive performance, matching her career-high with 17 points while adding seven rebounds. Junior guard Marley Washenitz contributed six points and six rebounds while finishing the game with a team-best plus/minus of +7.
For SMU, Jessica Peterson made program history by becoming just the third player in school history to record 300 rebounds in a single season. She finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds, notching her 12th double-double of the season. Nya Robertson led SMU in scoring with 15 points, while TK Pitts added 11 points, including seven in the fourth quarter.
Defensive Intensity Defines the Game
Both teams struggled offensively, with defense dictating the pace of the game. Pitt held SMU to just 32.3 percent shooting from the field and a mere 23.1 percent from three-point range. The Panthers also out-blocked the Mustangs, finishing with nine blocks compared to SMU’s eight.
Despite winning the battle in second-chance points (16-8), SMU was hurt by turnovers, losing the turnover battle 17-11. The Mustangs’ aggressive play in the closing minutes nearly led to a comeback win, but their inability to capitalize in the final moments ultimately cost them.
Looking Ahead
The victory marks a significant milestone for Pitt as they continue to gain momentum late in the season. The Panthers return home to face No. 3 Notre Dame on Thursday, Feb. 13, in what promises to be a challenging matchup.
Meanwhile, SMU, now 10-15 (2-11 ACC), will look to regroup before hosting Clemson on Sunday, Feb. 16, at Moody Coliseum. With the season winding down, the Mustangs will need to find consistency in their offense and take advantage of late-game opportunities to secure more wins in ACC play.
This hard-fought battle showcased the resilience of both teams, but on this night, it was Pitt’s defensive grit and Faye’s historic performance that proved to be the difference.
