North Carolina Smothers SMU in a Dominant Victory
Tar Heels Extend Their Winning Streak
The No. 14 North Carolina women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance on Thursday night, defeating SMU 64-33 at Moody Coliseum in Dallas. With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 16-3 overall and 4-2 in ACC play, extending their winning streak to three games. Led by Lexi Donarski’s sharpshooting and Alyssa Ustby’s dominance on the boards, North Carolina’s suffocating defense held SMU to its lowest scoring output of the season.
Donarski finished with 15 points, including an impressive 5-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Ustby tallied 12 points and matched her career-high with 18 rebounds, notching her eighth double-double of the season. Indya Nivar also contributed significantly with 11 points and a well-rounded performance.
SMU’s Struggles from the Start
The game began with a promising three-pointer from SMU’s Kaysia Woods, but it was the only bright spot in an otherwise challenging start for the Mustangs. North Carolina quickly responded with a 9-0 run, holding SMU scoreless for over six minutes. The Tar Heels’ defense forced difficult shots and limited SMU to just two field goals in the first quarter. Despite North Carolina’s offensive efficiency, SMU’s defense showed moments of resistance, keeping the score within reach at 13-6 after the first period.
However, SMU’s offensive woes continued in the second quarter, as the Mustangs shot a dismal 13.8% from the field in the first half. Woods was the lone bright spot for SMU, scoring seven points by halftime, including two three-pointers. The Tar Heels, meanwhile, capitalized on SMU’s struggles, extending their lead to 31-14 at the break.
North Carolina’s Second-Half Domination
North Carolina picked up where they left off in the second half, with Donarski and Ustby leading the charge. Donarski’s hot hand from three-point range helped the Tar Heels maintain their momentum, while Ustby continued to dominate the boards, ensuring SMU had limited second-chance opportunities. By the end of the third quarter, North Carolina had built a 44-22 lead, effectively putting the game out of reach.
SMU’s offense showed slight improvement in the fourth quarter, as Woods scored five points to help the Mustangs surpass double digits in a period for the first time in the game. However, the Tar Heels’ defense remained relentless, holding SMU to 19.4% shooting for the game—the lowest field-goal percentage allowed by North Carolina in ACC play under head coach Courtney Banghart.
Key Performances
Donarski’s efficiency from beyond the arc was a highlight of the game, as she drained five three-pointers, marking the sixth time in her Tar Heel career she has hit five or more in a game. Ustby’s 18 rebounds and all-around impact underlined her value as one of the team’s most consistent performers. Nivar, celebrating her 21st birthday, added 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists in another strong outing.
For SMU, Woods led the way with 12 points and six rebounds, tying her season-high in scoring. Jessica Peterson contributed five points and 12 rebounds, continuing her impressive season as one of the top rebounders in the NCAA. Despite their individual efforts, SMU struggled to generate consistent offense and was outscored 34-10 in the paint.
Defensive Excellence
North Carolina’s defensive effort was a key factor in the victory. The Tar Heels held SMU to just 33 points, the second-fewest points allowed in ACC play in program history. This was the eighth game this season in which North Carolina held an opponent to 50 points or fewer. The Tar Heels forced SMU into difficult shots throughout the game, limiting the Mustangs to only four field goals in the first half and 10 overall.
Rebounding was another area where North Carolina excelled, as they outrebounded SMU 52-36. Ustby’s dominance on the boards ensured that the Tar Heels controlled the game’s tempo, while their ability to convert rebounds into fast-break opportunities added to their offensive efficiency.
Looking Ahead
North Carolina will remain on the road for their next game, traveling to Pittsburgh on Sunday for an ACC matchup. The Tar Heels will aim to continue their winning streak and solidify their position as one of the top teams in the conference.
SMU, now 10-8 overall and 2-4 in ACC play, faces a daunting task as they travel to South Bend to take on No. 3 Notre Dame on Sunday. The Mustangs will need to address their offensive inconsistencies and improve their shooting if they hope to compete against another top-ranked opponent.
This game highlighted North Carolina’s ability to dominate on both ends of the court, showcasing their defensive discipline and offensive depth. Meanwhile, SMU will need to regroup and refocus as they navigate a challenging stretch of ACC competition.
