No. 17 Baylor Volleyball Triumphs Over Iowa State, 3-1
The 17th-ranked Baylor volleyball team secured an impressive 3-1 victory over Iowa State at the Ferrell Center on Wednesday night, in what proved to be a thrilling showdown. The win, which came by set scores of 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, and 25-16, marked Baylor’s fourth consecutive victory and showcased a standout performance from graduate transfer Jackie Barrett Frazier.
Baylor now holds a 14-6 overall record and a 6-3 mark in Big 12 play, while Iowa State falls to 9-11 overall and 3-6 in conference matches. This match added another chapter to a competitive series history, as Baylor extended its lead over Iowa State to 33-26 all-time.
First Set: A Hard-Fought Start
The opening set was a back-and-forth battle, with Iowa State coming out strong and taking an early 8-4 lead. Baylor responded with a surge, led by key plays from senior libero Lauren Briseño and sophomore outside hitter Kendal Murphy. Briseño’s service ace sparked a scoring run that brought the Bears level at 8-8. The Cyclones continued to put pressure on Baylor, maintaining a slim lead as the set progressed. However, Baylor's persistence paid off, and the Bears managed to flip the score, taking a 21-18 lead late in the set.
Senior outside hitter Elise McGhee contributed with a pair of aces, and Murphy’s powerful kill secured the set for Baylor at 25-23. Despite the narrow win, it was evident that both teams were ready to leave it all on the court, setting the tone for an intense match.
Second Set: Baylor Finds Its Groove
Baylor carried the momentum into the second set, where they dominated Iowa State with a combination of efficient offense and tenacious defense. Graduate transfer setter Jackie Barrett Frazier was a key figure, contributing with a well-rounded performance. The Bears opened the set with a strong 9-5 lead, aided by kills from McGhee and junior outside hitter Allie Sczech. Iowa State struggled with service and attack errors, which allowed Baylor to stay in control.
The Cyclones’ mistakes, coupled with Baylor’s aggressive play, helped the Bears to a comfortable 25-18 set victory. By the end of the set, Baylor was outhitting Iowa State .312 to .152, showing their dominance in key moments.
Third Set: Iowa State Pushes Back
Iowa State refused to go down without a fight and came out swinging in the third set. The Cyclones took an early 3-0 lead, propelled by back-to-back blocks and strong play from junior outside hitter Faith DeRonde. Baylor managed to briefly take the lead at 12-11, but the set remained a closely contested affair, tied at 17-17 following an unsuccessful Iowa State challenge.
The Cyclones then went on a decisive 4-0 scoring run, with Rachel Van Gorp playing a crucial role in extending their lead. Despite efforts from Baylor’s redshirt junior middle blocker Alicia Andrew, who notched three kills and a block, Iowa State secured the set 25-19, keeping their hopes alive and pushing the match to a fourth set.
Fourth Set: Baylor Closes Out Strong
The Bears regrouped in the fourth set and came out determined to finish the match. Sophomore middle blocker Victoria Davis was a defensive force, contributing four blocks and a career-high seven kills. Baylor jumped out to a 10-7 lead, with contributions from Sczech and a solo block by senior middle blocker Manuela Bibinbe.
As Iowa State continued to commit errors, Baylor capitalized on the opportunities, going on multiple scoring runs. McGhee and Barrett Frazier provided the offensive firepower needed to push the Bears ahead, and by the middle of the set, Baylor was back in their groove. The Cyclones, unable to regain momentum, succumbed to Baylor’s pressure. Bibinbe sealed the match with a powerful solo block, closing out the set 25-16 and securing the win for the Bears.

Jackie Barrett Frazier had a historic night, becoming the first Baylor player since 2009 to record a triple-double. She finished with 10 kills, 23 assists, and 16 digs, displaying her versatility and impact on both offense and defense. Her ability to spread the ball and find open attackers kept Iowa State’s defense on its toes.
Elise McGhee led the team in kills with 13 and continued her strong serving performance, adding three aces. Lauren Briseño was a defensive anchor, contributing crucial digs and serving up aces that changed the momentum in Baylor’s favor.
Victoria Davis had a breakout performance, tallying a career-high seven kills and four blocks. Her energy and presence at the net were vital in Baylor’s ability to shut down Iowa State’s attack, especially in the fourth set.
Iowa State’s Efforts
Iowa State had standout performances from Faith DeRonde, who led the Cyclones with 16 kills and added eight digs. Rachel Van Gorp contributed with eight kills and a .389 hitting efficiency, while libero Brooke Stonestreet collected 19 digs, moving into ninth place in Iowa State’s all-time career digs list.
Despite their efforts, the Cyclones were hampered by 37 total errors, which proved costly in key moments. Service errors, in particular, disrupted their rhythm and allowed Baylor to capitalize on free points.

With the win, Baylor improves to 6-3 in Big 12 play and will look to extend their winning streak when they face Colorado on Friday night at the Ferrell Center. The Buffaloes, who have lost four straight matches, present an opportunity for Baylor to solidify their position in the conference standings.
