RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 14 NC State delivered a thrilling fourth-quarter comeback to take down No. 10 Duke 89-83 on Monday night at Reynolds Coliseum. The Wolfpack trailed by as many as 13 points early in the third quarter but stormed back behind a career-high 36-point performance from Aziaha James.

The Blue Devils controlled the boards with a 41-36 rebounding edge, but NC State’s second-half efficiency and defensive stops proved to be the difference.

The game opened with both teams exchanging early baskets. Duke trailed 12-11 at the 4:26 mark before the Wolfpack responded with a 10-1 run to take a 22-12 lead. Jackson’s buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the quarter cut the deficit to seven, with Duke trailing 24-17.
The Blue Devils stormed back in the second quarter, going on a blistering 14-0 run to take a 31-24 lead at the 7:32 mark. Jackson and Mair hit consecutive three-pointers, while Duke’s defense stifled NC State’s offense. The Wolfpack managed just two points over the first eight minutes of the quarter, allowing Duke to head into halftime with a 43-32 lead.
NC State Chips Away in the Third Quarter
Duke extended its lead to 12 early in the third quarter before NC State began its rally. James and Rivers fueled an 8-2 Wolfpack run, trimming the deficit to 55-49 with five minutes remaining in the period. NC State continued to claw back, finishing the quarter on a 10-2 run to pull within four at 66-62 heading into the fourth.
Wolfpack Seals the Comeback in the Fourth

Duke managed to tie the game twice in the final minutes, but James’ final surge secured the win for NC State. With the Wolfpack leading 84-81, James hit a difficult off-balance shot over two defenders to extend the lead to five with 35.9 seconds remaining. Duke failed to score on its next possession, allowing NC State to seal the victory at the free-throw line.
Key Performances Propel NC State
James’ 36-point outing set a new career high and marked her second-highest scoring performance against Duke. She made 11 of her 13 shots in the second half and scored 15 of NC State’s 27 fourth-quarter points.
Rivers’ defensive work and leadership kept NC State in the game, while Brooks provided timely baskets, including several key mid-range jumpers in the third quarter. Lorena Awou, a first-year student, stepped up in the fourth quarter, making all three of her shots and adding three rebounds and a block in crucial moments.
Duke had strong individual performances from Jackson and Mair, but their defense faltered late. The Blue Devils shot 43% from the field and 46% from three but could not contain NC State’s second-half momentum.
Turning Point: James Takes Over
James’ ability to attack the rim and hit contested shots proved to be the game’s defining factor. Her nine straight points in the fourth quarter gave NC State the lead for good, and her off-balance floater in the final minute sealed the win.
Looking Ahead
NC State will travel to No. 22 Florida State on Sunday in a crucial ACC matchup. The Wolfpack remain in contention for a top tournament seed and will look to keep their winning streak alive.
Duke returns home to face Clemson on Thursday, aiming to bounce back and regain momentum as they continue their tough conference schedule.
