No. 10 FSU Stunned Again, This Time by Rebuilding Boston College
Florida State's 2024 season continues to spiral downward, as the No. 10 Seminoles suffered their second consecutive upset loss, this time to a rebuilding Boston College team. The Eagles stunned FSU with a 28-13 victory on Monday night in Tallahassee, leaving the Seminoles' hopes of making the College Football Playoff all but shattered.
A Disastrous Start to the Season
For a program that entered the season with playoff aspirations, Florida State’s 0-2 start is nothing short of catastrophic. After a shocking Week 0 loss to Georgia Tech, the Seminoles were expected to bounce back in their home opener against Boston College. However, the Eagles dominated the game on both sides of the ball, with FSU struggling to find consistency on offense and defense.
Boston College's offense was led by former Florida State running back Treshaun Ward, who totaled 138 yards, including a crucial 13-yard touchdown reception. The Eagles racked up 263 rushing yards against a Seminoles defense that appeared overmatched throughout the game.
Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, who transferred to FSU with high expectations, once again failed to deliver. Uiagalelei threw for 272 yards, completing just 50% of his passes, with one touchdown and an interception. FSU’s offense struggled to find rhythm, scoring only once in the second half on a 29-yard touchdown pass to Kentron Poitier in the third quarter.
Boston College Dominates the Trenches
The Eagles, led by new head coach Bill O'Brien, won the game at the line of scrimmage, dominating both offensively and defensively. Boston College's offensive line opened up running lanes all night, while their defense pressured Uiagalelei into making poor decisions. BC defensive back Max Tucker intercepted Uiagalelei in a pivotal moment and returned the ball to the FSU 7-yard line, setting up a short touchdown that extended the Eagles' lead to 21-6.
O'Brien's creative play-calling kept the Seminoles' defense on its heels, while Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos made key plays with both his arm and legs. Castellanos threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, cementing Boston College’s first major victory of the season.
FSU's Playoff Hopes Crushed
This second consecutive loss effectively eliminates Florida State from contention for one of the 12 spots in the College Football Playoff. With two conference losses already on the books, the Seminoles will have a steep hill to climb to even contend for an ACC title.
Head coach Mike Norvell, now in his fourth season, finds himself squarely on the hot seat. FSU has a storied football history under legends like Bobby Bowden and Jimbo Fisher, and the program has historically shown little patience for underperforming head coaches. Norvell's seat is only getting warmer after this disastrous start, and if he doesn't turn things around quickly, he may find himself out of a job by season’s end.
Looking Ahead
The Seminoles now face a bye week, giving them some time to regroup before their next game against Memphis. However, with confidence shaken and playoff hopes dashed, it remains to be seen if Norvell can rally his team for the remainder of the season.
Meanwhile, Boston College will look to build on this signature win under O’Brien as they prepare to face Duquesne next week. While it’s still early, this victory provides a major boost to a team in the midst of a rebuild.
For Florida State, the question now is not whether they can make the playoffs, but whether they can salvage what’s left of a season that started with so much promise.
