NC State Pulls Off Late Surge to Defeat Syracuse 74-66
Wolfpack Extend Win Streak with Strong Fourth Quarter
The No. 20 NC State Wolfpack women’s basketball team pulled off an impressive comeback to defeat Syracuse 74-66 on Thursday night at the JMA Wireless Dome. Trailing for more than 34 minutes, NC State outscored Syracuse 20-9 in the fourth quarter, including an 11-0 run to close out the game. With this victory, NC State improved to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in ACC play, extending their win streak to four games and maintaining second place in the conference standings.
Sophomore guard Zoe Brooks led the Wolfpack with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Graduate guard Madison Hayes added 18 points and nine rebounds, falling just short of a double-double. Syracuse, now 7-12 overall and 1-7 in ACC play, put up a strong fight, with Sophie Burrows scoring 16 points and Georgia Woolley and Kyra Wood contributing 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Syracuse’s Dominant Start
Syracuse came into the game with energy and determination, immediately countering NC State’s opening three-pointer with a string of quick baskets. The Orange’s ball movement and fluid offense helped them build a 24-15 lead by the end of the first quarter. Burrows played a key role, scoring nine points and grabbing six rebounds in the opening period.
The second quarter saw more of the same from Syracuse, who extended their lead to as many as 11 points. The Orange’s defensive zone caused issues for NC State, forcing the Wolfpack to rely on individual playmaking. Brooks kept the visitors within striking distance with eight points in the quarter, but Syracuse entered halftime with a comfortable 42-32 advantage.
NC State’s Resilience in the Second Half
The Wolfpack came out of the locker room with renewed focus, improving their defensive intensity and finding rhythm on offense. Hayes sparked a 7-0 run midway through the third quarter, cutting Syracuse’s lead to three points. Despite a late push by Syracuse, which included key free throws to keep their lead intact, NC State narrowed the deficit to 57-54 heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Hayes hit an and-one layup on NC State’s first possession to tie the game at 57-57. From there, the game became a back-and-forth battle. Syracuse momentarily regained the lead at 62-59, but a free throw from Brooks tied the game once again. The Wolfpack took their first lead since the opening minutes when Brooks hit two free throws to make it 67-66 with 1:19 remaining.
Closing Out with Authority
NC State’s late-game execution was the difference in the contest. A jumper from Aziaha James extended the lead to three points, and the Wolfpack’s defense forced consecutive stops. Syracuse’s head coach Felisha Legette-Jack was assessed a technical foul in the final moments, giving NC State additional free throws. Brooks and Lorena Awou capitalized, sinking three of the four attempts to seal the victory. NC State finished the game on an 11-0 run, leaving Syracuse scoreless in the final two minutes.
Key Performances
Brooks’ all-around performance stood out, with her 19 points, six assists, and eight rebounds showcasing her value on both ends of the court. Hayes also delivered in critical moments, scoring from beyond the arc and inside while collecting nine rebounds.
Syracuse had strong individual performances from Burrows, Woolley, and Wood. Burrows led the Orange for the third consecutive game, adding eight rebounds to her 16 points. Woolley returned from illness to score 15 points, and Wood recorded a near double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Despite their efforts, Syracuse’s inability to match NC State’s fourth-quarter intensity cost them the game.

The game’s pivotal moment came in the final three minutes. NC State’s defense held Syracuse without a field goal during this stretch, while their offense executed efficiently.
