Miami Holds Off Pitt 62-56 in Defensive ACC Opener
The Miami Hurricanes women’s basketball team showcased their defensive dominance in a gritty 62-56 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers on Sunday at Petersen Events Center. This win marks Miami’s ninth of the season and their first in ACC play, improving their record to 9-1. Despite Pitt’s second-half surge, Miami’s balanced scoring and defensive intensity sealed the game in the final moments.
The loss drops Pitt to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Led by Khadija Faye’s standout performance, the Panthers battled back but ultimately fell short in a game defined by streaks and defensive stops.
Miami’s Commanding First Half
From the opening tip, Miami set the tone with their stifling defense, holding Pitt to just two field goals in the first quarter. The Hurricanes capitalized on early scoring opportunities, racing out to a 15-6 lead after the first ten minutes. Haley Cavinder led the way for Miami, scoring seven points in the opening period while also securing key rebounds.
Pitt’s offensive struggles continued into the second quarter, as they missed their first three shots and turned the ball over twice in the opening minutes. Miami took advantage, extending their lead to double digits. Late in the quarter, Pitt showed signs of life with a four-point play from MaKayla Elmore and a three-pointer from Aaryn Battle, cutting the Hurricanes’ lead to 10 at halftime, 32-22.
Pitt’s Second-Half Surge
Coming out of the break, Pitt found their rhythm. A quick jump shot by Marley Washenitz and a fadeaway jumper from Faye cut the deficit to six early in the third quarter. Despite Miami extending their lead to 11 midway through the period, Pitt continued to chip away. A three-pointer from Mikayla Johnson in the final minute of the third quarter brought the Panthers within four, trailing 48-44 heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Pitt’s momentum continued. A three-pointer from Aislin Malcolm and a strong inside finish from Elmore brought the Panthers within two points at 55-53. However, both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes as defensive pressure mounted on both ends. Miami eventually broke the drought, converting on a crucial layup and free throws to extend their lead.
Key Performances Propel Miami
Haley Cavinder’s double-double was instrumental in Miami’s win. She finished with 22 points, 11 rebounds, and five assists, leading the Hurricanes in every major statistical category. Jasmyne Roberts complemented her effort with 19 points, shooting efficiently from both the field and beyond the arc. Hanna Cavinder also played a pivotal role, contributing eight points, six assists, and five rebounds.
As a team, Miami shot 40.7% from the field and recorded 16 assists on 24 made field goals. Their ability to control the boards and force turnovers disrupted Pitt’s offensive flow throughout the game.
Pitt’s Struggles and Highlights
Despite the loss, Khadija Faye delivered a stellar performance for the Panthers, recording her sixth double-double of the season with 21 points and 14 rebounds. She was the focal point of Pitt’s offense, scoring crucial points in the paint and setting up teammates with timely passes. Mikayla Johnson added 11 points, including two three-pointers, while Elmore contributed valuable minutes with six rebounds and four assists.
Pitt shot just 34.5% from the field, including 13.3% in the first quarter. While their shooting improved in the second half, early struggles ultimately proved too much to overcome. The Panthers were also out-rebounded 39-35, marking their third loss this season when losing the battle on the boards.
Defensive Intensity Defines the Game
Both teams relied heavily on their defensive schemes, with Miami’s full-court press forcing Pitt into 11 turnovers. The Hurricanes’ ability to limit Pitt’s three-point shooting to 27.3% proved critical, especially during the game’s closing moments. Conversely, Pitt’s defense held Miami scoreless during crucial stretches but struggled to convert stops into points.
Looking Ahead
Miami now travels to Hawaii for the Maui Classic, where they will face Nevada and Oregon State to close out non-conference play. With a 9-1 record and momentum from their ACC-opening win, the Hurricanes aim to solidify their place as one of the top teams in the conference.
Pitt will conclude their four-game homestand on Thursday against New Hampshire. This matchup offers an opportunity for the Panthers to regroup and build on their strong second-half effort against Miami. Improving consistency, particularly in their shooting and rebounding, will be key as Pitt prepares for the heart of ACC play.
A Competitive Start to ACC Play
Miami’s 62-56 victory over Pitt highlighted the importance of defensive intensity and balanced scoring. While the Hurricanes showcased their ability to control the game on both ends of the floor, Pitt’s resilience and determination underscored their potential to compete in the ACC. As both teams move forward, their performances in this game serve as a benchmark for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
