Maryland Dominates Syracuse 87-60 in Gotham Classic
The Maryland Terrapins extended their winning streak with an emphatic 87-60 victory over the Syracuse Orange on Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Selton Miguel led the charge for Maryland, scoring a season-high 24 points, while Ja’Kobi Gillespie recorded his first career double-double with 17 points and 11 assists.
The win improved Maryland’s record to 10-2, as the Terrapins showcased their defensive prowess and offensive efficiency, holding Syracuse to one of its lowest-scoring performances this season.
First-Half Domination
Maryland set the tone early, capitalizing on Syracuse’s struggles in the opening minutes. Despite both teams starting slowly, Maryland’s defense forced six turnovers within the first seven minutes, translating into a 12-6 lead.
The Terrapins surged in the latter part of the first half, closing with a 17-2 run that pushed their lead to 43-17 at halftime. Miguel scored 16 of his 24 points in the first half, connecting on four three-pointers. Julian Reese’s presence in the paint and Ja’Kobi Gillespie’s playmaking helped Maryland dominate the middle eight minutes, effectively putting the game out of reach before the break.
Syracuse, hindered by poor shooting and turnovers, could not find an offensive rhythm. The Orange shot just 27.6% from the field and committed 12 turnovers in the first half. Their inability to generate points in the paint—just four in the first 12 minutes—highlighted Maryland’s defensive control.
Second-Half Efforts
The second half saw Syracuse make a more competitive push, led by Elijah Moore and Donnie Freeman. Moore finished with a team-high 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Freeman contributed 15 points and seven rebounds. The Orange shot an improved 58.6% from the field in the second half, including a strong performance from beyond the arc, where they hit 7-of-10 attempts.
Despite Syracuse’s better offensive showing, Maryland maintained control with consistent scoring and strong defense. Gillespie’s behind-the-back assist to Miguel for a three-pointer highlighted Maryland’s fluid ball movement.
The Terrapins finished the game with 15 steals, converting Syracuse’s 21 turnovers into 25 points. Maryland also dominated the paint, outscoring Syracuse 42-26 inside.
Standout Performances
Selton Miguel’s 24-point performance marked his second consecutive standout game, following a season-high effort against Saint Francis (PA). Miguel’s six three-pointers were a career-high, showcasing his ability to stretch the floor and punish defensive lapses.
Ja’Kobi Gillespie was instrumental in running the offense, delivering 11 assists to complement his 17 points. His court vision and ability to create scoring opportunities were pivotal in Maryland’s success.
Julian Reese overcame a slow start to finish with a double-double, posting 11 points and 13 rebounds. Reese’s physicality in the paint was key in neutralizing Syracuse’s frontcourt threats.
For Syracuse, Elijah Moore and Donnie Freeman led the offense, combining for 31 points. However, their efforts were not enough to overcome Maryland’s balanced attack and defensive intensity.
Maryland’s Efficiency
Maryland’s offensive balance was on full display, with all five starters scoring in double figures. The team shot 44.4% from beyond the arc and 46.2% overall, continuing its trend of high-scoring performances.
The Terrapins also showcased their depth, with contributions from key bench players like Tafara Gapare, who added six points, three rebounds, and a block in 16 minutes. Maryland’s ability to sustain its performance across all positions highlighted the team’s depth and versatility.
Syracuse’s Struggles
Syracuse’s issues with turnovers and defense plagued them throughout the game. The Orange have now lost four of their last five games, dropping to 5-6 on the season. Playing without their leading scorer, J.J. Starling, Syracuse struggled to find consistent offensive production.
Syracuse head coach Adrian Autry acknowledged the team’s challenges, as the Orange failed to capitalize on their improved shooting in the second half. Despite better ball movement, Syracuse could not close the gap due to defensive lapses and missed opportunities early in the game.
Looking Ahead
Maryland will look to continue its strong season with a matchup against Maryland-Eastern Shore next Saturday. The Terrapins’ performance against Syracuse underscores their potential to compete at the highest level as they prepare for tougher Big Ten competition.
Syracuse will return home to host Bucknell, aiming to address its defensive and turnover issues as it seeks to regain momentum heading into conference play.
A Statement Victory
Maryland’s 87-60 win over Syracuse was a testament to the Terrapins’ growth and dominance this season. With Miguel and Gillespie leading the way, Maryland has established itself as a top-tier team capable of excelling on both ends of the floor.
As the Gotham Classic demonstrated, Maryland’s depth, efficiency, and defensive intensity make them a formidable opponent. Syracuse, meanwhile, must regroup and find answers to their ongoing struggles to avoid further setbacks.
