Jackson State Triumphs Over South Carolina State: A Stellar Beginning for T.C. Taylor
ATLANTA — The 2023 MEAC-SWAC Challenge witnessed the dawn of a new era for Jackson State football on Saturday. T.C. Taylor made a commanding debut as Jackson State's head coach, leading the team to a 37-7 victory over South Carolina State at Center Parc Stadium.
This triumph is a welcome reversal of fortunes, given the last encounter between these teams in Atlanta ended in a 31-10 defeat for Jackson State in the Celebration Bowl. This time, the Tigers took charge, notching their first win against a MEAC team since they overpowered Florida A&M in 2018.
Virginia Tech transfer, Jason Brown, in his inaugural start for Jackson State, showcased a performance to remember. He passed for an astounding 356 yards, setting the MEAC/SWAC Challenge record for passing yards and completion percentage. With Jackson State amassing a total of 490 yards against South Carolina State's 201, it was evident who dominated the field. The Tigers' offense was a force to be reckoned with, averaging more than 10 yards per play in the initial half.
The first two quarters saw Jackson State taking a comfortable 17-0 lead, with standout plays including Irv Mulligan's impressive 46-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Corey Fields from the Bulldogs found himself under constant pressure, completing only three of his 11 first-half passes.
Jackson State continued their offensive onslaught post-halftime, scoring on all of their third-quarter drives. This bolstered their lead to 34-0, effectively putting the game beyond reach for the Bulldogs. South Carolina State did manage to break the shutout in the final minutes, with Fields leading a touchdown drive in the closing moments.
Coach Taylor's win in Atlanta breaks his previous 0-4 record at the MEAC/SWAC Challenge and brings much-needed redemption. The sheer joy and pride of the fans were palpable as they erupted into a celebratory "T.C." chant, reminiscent of Coach Taylor's playing days for his alma mater.
While the celebrations are in full swing, Taylor remains grounded. Upon his appointment in December 2022, he was well aware of the lofty expectations. After a victory this decisive, it seems Jackson State is keen on maintaining its winning legacy.
South Carolina State, on the other hand, despite their 2021 Celebration Bowl dominance, struggled to decipher Jackson State's strategies under their new leadership. S.C. State coach Buddy Pough recognized the difference from their last encounter, praising Taylor's preparedness and tactical approach.
Jackson State now turns its attention to its next challenge: a matchup against SWAC rival Florida A&M on Sept. 3 in the Orange Blossom Classic in Miami Gardens, Florida. As history has shown, the winner of this classic often shapes the course of the SWAC championship. If their current form is anything to go by, Jackson State will be a team to watch.
