Incarnate Word Beats McNeese State
Today, Incarnate Word continued their winning streak, securing a decisive 30-17 victory over McNeese State in a Southland Conference matchup. We were there at the game, witnessing the Cardinals extend their win streak to four games, improving to 5-2 overall and remaining undefeated in conference play at 2-0. With key contributions from running back Dekalon Taylor and kicker Brack Peacock, the Cardinals dominated the game, particularly in the second half. We also captured pictures throughout the game, which will be uploaded soon.
Taylor Sets the Pace for Incarnate Word
From the outset, Dekalon Taylor led the charge for the Cardinals’ offense. His ability to find gaps in the defense proved essential as he rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. Taylor’s steady running allowed Incarnate Word to control the tempo, and his performance was pivotal in ensuring their success.
Early in the first quarter, McNeese struck first with a 36-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kamden Sixkiller to wide receiver Jer’Michael Carter. The Cowboys held a 7-0 lead until the second quarter, when Incarnate Word began to find their rhythm.
We saw Brack Peacock nail his first field goal, a 36-yarder, to get the Cardinals on the scoreboard, trimming the deficit to 7-3. Later in the second quarter, Incarnate Word quarterback Zach Calzada scrambled for a 15-yard touchdown run, giving the Cardinals their first lead at 10-7.
Peacock’s Clutch Field Goals Keep Incarnate Word Ahead
Peacock played a crucial role in keeping the Cardinals ahead. After McNeese tied the game 10-10 with a field goal, Peacock responded with a 30-yard kick, putting Incarnate Word back in the lead, 13-10, just before halftime.
As we watched from the stands, it was clear that Peacock’s accuracy and composure were instrumental. His next field goal, a 28-yarder early in the third quarter, extended the lead to 20-10 and gave the Cardinals a comfortable cushion.
Second Half Surge Secures the Win
After the halftime break, Incarnate Word came out determined to take control of the game. Mason Pierce delivered a 59-yard kickoff return to open the third quarter, setting up excellent field position for the Cardinals. Just five plays later, Taylor punched in a 7-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 20-10.
Backup quarterback Richard Torres, who stepped in for Calzada, made his presence known with a 28-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jalen Walthall later in the quarter. This score gave the Cardinals a commanding 27-10 lead and solidified their dominance.
Although McNeese attempted to respond with a 38-yard touchdown run by running back Joshon Barbie, cutting the lead to 27-17, Incarnate Word’s defense remained resolute. The Cardinals allowed no further points, and Peacock’s final field goal, another 28-yarder, sealed the 30-17 victory early in the fourth quarter.
Defense Holds Strong
Incarnate Word’s defense deserves much of the credit for the win. They consistently pressured McNeese quarterback Kamden Sixkiller, disrupting the Cowboys’ offensive rhythm. Sixkiller completed 21 of 36 passes for 219 yards and one touchdown, but the Cardinals' defense managed to shut down key plays when it mattered most.
Despite Jer’Michael Carter’s early touchdown, McNeese struggled to sustain drives throughout the game. Incarnate Word’s defense delivered crucial stops, helping to preserve their lead and prevent any serious comeback attempt.
We Witnessed Complementary Football
From our perspective in the stadium, it was evident that Incarnate Word’s success stemmed from their ability to play complementary football. The offense, defense, and special teams all played significant roles in the victory. Taylor’s efforts on the ground, combined with Peacock’s precision kicking and a stifling defensive performance, ensured the Cardinals’ dominance. We captured plenty of exciting moments, and those pictures will be uploaded soon.
What’s Next for Incarnate Word
This win marks Incarnate Word’s fourth consecutive victory, and the team has now outscored opponents 179-69 during this winning streak. Looking ahead, the Cardinals will face Southeastern Louisiana University in a highly anticipated Southland Conference showdown. With their balanced offense, led by Taylor and Calzada, and a defense that can make big plays, Incarnate Word remains one of the top contenders in the conference.
For McNeese State, the loss drops them to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play. They will need to regroup as they prepare for their next matchup, hoping to bounce back and remain competitive in the Southland Conference.
