Flyers Set Record for Service Aces in Victory Over Duquesne
The Dayton Flyers volleyball team continued their dominant season tonight, defeating the Duquesne Dukes in a four-set battle at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. The Flyers’ 3-1 victory (25-11, 25-17, 22-25, 25-20) marked their eighth consecutive win and set a new rally-scoring era record with 20 service aces. Dayton improved to 15-1 overall and remained undefeated in Atlantic 10 play at 5-0. Duquesne, now 11-6, dropped to 2-3 in conference competition.
Flyers’ Record-Setting Serving Performance
Dayton wasted no time asserting dominance in the match, with their serving leading the charge. Sophomore Taylor Russell had a career night with eight service aces, contributing to the Flyers' 20 total aces — a new rally-scoring era record for the program. The Flyers’ serving pressure kept Duquesne off balance throughout the match, giving Dayton an early advantage.
The Flyers were equally efficient in their offensive execution. Alayna Yates, who hit .444 for the match with eight kills, led Dayton’s balanced attack. Setter Alyssa Miller played a pivotal role, dishing out 41 assists while adding 12 digs for a double-double. Miller’s leadership helped the Flyers keep Duquesne’s defense guessing as she spread the ball effectively to all of Dayton’s attackers.
Duquesne’s Fightback in Set Three
Despite Dayton’s dominance in the first two sets, Duquesne found some momentum in the third. After dropping the first set 25-11 and the second 25-17, the Dukes came out strong in the third set, jumping to a 12-5 lead. Kills from sophomores Avery Hobson and Jordan Robertson ignited Duquesne's offense, and the Dukes managed to hold off a late Dayton surge.
With a decisive block from Ariel Helm and Hobson, Duquesne secured a 25-22 win in the third set, marking the first time Dayton has dropped a set in their last five matches. Helm led the Dukes with seven blocks, and her defensive presence helped stifle Dayton’s offense in the third set.
Dayton Bounces Back to Close the Match
The Flyers quickly regained control in the fourth set. After a tight start with both teams trading points, Dayton pulled away with a 4-0 run to take a 17-13 lead. Once again, the Flyers' serving and balanced offense proved too much for Duquesne to handle, as they closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
Dayton’s ability to recover after dropping the third set showcased the resilience that has propelled them to the top of the Atlantic 10 standings. The win extended Dayton’s regular-season conference winning streak to 25 matches, continuing their reign as the team to beat in the A-10.
Dayton's Dominance in Numbers
The Flyers' offensive and defensive balance was on full display, with their attack efficiency and serving accuracy proving crucial to their success. Dayton hit .236 as a team, while limiting Duquesne to a .145 hitting percentage. The Flyers also out-blocked the Dukes, finishing the match with 11 total team blocks to Duquesne’s eight. Dayton’s ability to shut down key Duquesne hitters like Robertson in critical moments was a turning point in the match, as the Flyers’ defense provided the stability they needed to regain control in the final set.
Russell’s serving performance was backed by a strong defensive effort from libero Madison Huffman, who led Dayton with 14 digs. Huffman’s ability to cover the back row helped contain Duquesne’s attempts to build any offensive momentum.
Duquesne’s Standout Performances Despite the Loss
Despite falling short, Duquesne showed resilience, especially in the third set when they clawed back into the match. Graduate student Elizabeth Drelling led the Dukes’ attack with 10 kills, while Helm and Hobson were instrumental on defense. Their blocking efforts in the third set frustrated Dayton’s attackers, allowing Duquesne to extend the match to a fourth set.
Setter Grace Kristofic contributed 14 assists and nine digs, while Chloe Wilmot added 13 assists, seven digs, and three aces. Duquesne’s defense did manage to keep Dayton’s hitters in check during stretches of the match, holding the Flyers to their second-lowest hitting percentage of the season.
What’s Next for Dayton and Duquesne
With the victory, Dayton now looks ahead to a key Atlantic 10 series against preseason No. 2 Loyola Chicago. The Flyers will host back-to-back matches this Friday and Saturday, aiming to extend their winning streak and maintain their grip on the conference.
Duquesne, meanwhile, will look to regroup as they prepare for a two-match series on the road against Rhode Island this weekend. The Dukes will need to build on their third-set performance as they seek consistency in Atlantic 10 play.
Flyers’ Continued Dominance in A-10 Play
As Dayton continues their march toward an Atlantic 10 title, their focus remains on refining their attack and maintaining consistency. With players like Russell and Miller stepping up, the Flyers are poised to remain at the top of the conference standings and make a deep run in the postseason.
While Dayton's serving has been a key strength, head coach Tim Horsmon will likely focus on improving the team’s efficiency in other areas, particularly on reducing errors. The Flyers’ depth has been a critical factor, and with their balanced roster of veterans and emerging talents, Dayton is well-positioned to continue their dominance in the Atlantic 10.
