Florida State Secures First ACC Road Win with 80-65 Victory Over Miami
The Florida State Seminoles captured their first ACC road victory of the season with an 80-65 win over in-state rival Miami at the Watsco Center on Wednesday night. The victory extended FSU’s winning streak over the Hurricanes to four games, improving their record to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in ACC play. Miami, still searching for their first conference win, dropped to 4-11 overall and 0-4 in the ACC.
Dominant First Half Sets the Tone
Florida State established control early, utilizing their size advantage and defensive intensity. The Hurricanes managed a quick 5-0 lead to open the game, but the Seminoles quickly responded with a 13-2 run, taking control midway through the first half.
Jamir Watkins’ three-pointer at the 14:34 mark gave FSU its first lead at 9-7, a lead they would never relinquish. Jerry Deng’s free throws extended the margin, and by halftime, the Seminoles had built a commanding 39-25 lead.
Defensively, FSU held Miami to just 35% shooting in the first half while forcing eight turnovers. The Hurricanes struggled to contend with FSU’s shot-blocking and defensive pressure, a theme that carried into the second half.
Malique Ewin Leads the Charge
Junior forward Malique Ewin turned in one of the best performances of his career, recording his third double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Ewin was dominant in the paint, shooting 10-of-14 from the field and grabbing four offensive rebounds that led to second-chance points for the Seminoles.
Ewin’s contributions were particularly significant in the second half, where he added 12 points to keep Miami at bay during their brief runs.
Supporting Cast Steps Up
Sophomore Taylor Bol Bowen had an equally impactful night, finishing with 16 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting, including 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Bowen’s efficient scoring stretched Miami’s defense and created additional opportunities for his teammates.
Jamir Watkins, despite early foul trouble, contributed 10 points, marking his 12th consecutive game scoring in double figures. Freshman guard Daquan Davis played a pivotal role in orchestrating the offense, recording a career-high 10 assists with only one turnover in 25 minutes. Davis also added nine points and three rebounds to cap off an impressive all-around performance.
Miami’s Struggles Continue
The Hurricanes faced an uphill battle throughout the game. Senior forward Matthew Cleveland scored 16 points, 14 of which came in the second half, to lead Miami. Sophomore guard Paul Djobet added 13 points but struggled to find consistency against FSU’s aggressive defense.
Miami managed to cut the deficit to six points in the second half after a long three-pointer by freshman Austin Swartz. However, costly turnovers and FSU’s efficient offense widened the gap once again, as the Seminoles closed the game on a dominant 30-7 run.
Key Stats
FSU’s dominance was evident in the numbers. The Seminoles shot 50% from the field (32-of-64) and made 10 three-pointers, compared to Miami’s 4-of-17 performance from beyond the arc. FSU also out-rebounded Miami 39-25, with Ewin and Bowen combining for 16 boards.
Defensively, the Seminoles showcased their prowess, earning seven blocks and eight steals. Chandler Jackson led the way with three blocks, while Justin Thomas added three steals to disrupt Miami’s offensive rhythm.
Looking Ahead
With back-to-back ACC wins, Florida State heads into Saturday’s matchup against Clemson with momentum. The Seminoles will face a tougher test on the road at Littlejohn Coliseum, where the Tigers boast a strong home record.
Miami, meanwhile, will remain at home to host Wake Forest on Saturday. The Hurricanes will need to address their turnover issues and improve their three-point shooting to snap their losing streak and secure their first ACC win.
A Key Step Forward
Florida State’s 80-65 win over Miami highlighted their ability to execute on both ends of the floor. With Ewin and Bowen leading the charge and strong contributions from their supporting cast, the Seminoles demonstrated why they remain a competitive force in the ACC.
For Miami, the game underscored the challenges of rebuilding against tough competition. As the season progresses, the Hurricanes will aim to refine their approach and find consistency in their play to turn their season around.
