Florida Atlantic Cruises Past Wagner with 41-10 Victory
Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Owls secured a dominant 41-10 victory over Wagner University Seahawks at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton on Saturday night. The win improved the Owls to 2-3 on the season, giving them much-needed momentum as they bounced back from a tough early-season stretch. FAU's ground game and a strong defensive performance were the key factors in the victory.
First Quarter Momentum
FAU took control from the very beginning, starting with a 71-yard completion on the first play of the game. This explosive play set up an early 4-yard rushing touchdown, allowing the Owls to take a quick 7-0 lead within the first minute. The momentum continued as FAU’s offensive line dominated the first quarter, providing space for the running backs to make significant gains.
As the game progressed, the Owls extended their lead to 17-0 with a field goal and a 22-yard touchdown run. FAU's ability to capitalize on early drives put Wagner on the defensive, and the Owls' offense continued to push ahead, outpacing the Seahawks from the start.
Wagner’s Response in the Second Quarter
Wagner found a brief spark in the second quarter, with a key passing play that resulted in a 43-yard gain. The drive ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass, narrowing FAU’s lead to 17-7. A field goal later in the quarter brought Wagner within 17-10 at halftime, making it seem like the Seahawks might mount a comeback.
Despite Wagner's improved performance in the second quarter, FAU's defense remained strong, and the team looked to reassert control going into the second half.
FAU’s Second-Half Surge
After halftime, FAU reestablished dominance on both sides of the ball. The Owls’ defense effectively shut down Wagner's offense for the remainder of the game, limiting them to just 30 yards in three of the four quarters. FAU’s offense, which had stumbled slightly toward the end of the first half, found its rhythm again in the third quarter.
FAU’s running game took over, with the team extending its lead through a combination of rushing touchdowns and strong offensive drives. The Owls scored a field goal early in the third quarter to increase their lead to 20-10, and a subsequent 11-yard rushing touchdown stretched the advantage even further.
In the fourth quarter, FAU put the game out of reach with another rushing touchdown, followed by a 1-yard touchdown run in the closing minutes. By the end of the game, FAU had built an insurmountable 41-10 lead.
Ground Game Key to Victory
FAU’s success on the ground was one of the main reasons for their comfortable win. The Owls’ running backs combined for 310 rushing yards and five touchdowns, consistently finding gaps in Wagner’s defense. Their powerful rushing attack wore down the Seahawks and allowed FAU to control the pace of the game from start to finish.
FAU’s offensive line also played a crucial role in creating running lanes, while the team’s running backs executed effectively, leading to multiple scoring opportunities. The combination of a strong running game and efficient offensive execution allowed the Owls to dominate the time of possession and keep Wagner’s defense on the field.
Defensive Dominance
FAU’s defense was equally impressive, holding Wagner to just 132 total yards and only 20 rushing yards. The Owls consistently pressured the Seahawks’ offense, recording 13 tackles for loss, two sacks, and seven pass breakups. This relentless pressure prevented Wagner from gaining any significant momentum, particularly in the second half.
The defensive unit responded well after a disappointing performance the previous week, showing improved discipline and execution. The ability to limit Wagner’s offensive production was critical in securing the win.
Looking Ahead
FAU’s victory over Wagner provides a confidence boost as the Owls head into their bye week. With their next game scheduled against North Texas on October 12, FAU will look to build on this performance as they return to American Athletic Conference (AAC) play. The team has shown glimpses of its potential, particularly with a strong rushing attack and an improved defensive performance.
For Wagner, the loss continues a tough stretch of games, as they struggled to keep up with FAU’s balanced offense and strong defense. Wagner will need to regroup as they prepare for their upcoming matchups.
