Duke Defeats FSU for First Time, Adding Heat to Mike Norvell's Hot Seat
Duke achieved a historic victory on Friday night, defeating Florida State 23-16 for the first time in program history. The win not only snapped FSU’s 22-game winning streak against the Blue Devils, but it also pushed Duke to a 6-1 record, making them bowl-eligible in head coach Manny Diaz’s first season. On the other side, Florida State continued its nightmarish season, dropping to 1-6, the program’s worst start since 1975.
Duke’s Defense Shines
Duke’s defense led the charge in the upset, forcing four turnovers and registering six sacks. Junior defensive back Chandler Rivers set the tone with a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter, giving Duke a lead they never relinquished. The Blue Devils followed that up with back-to-back turnovers on Florida State’s next two possessions, leading to a touchdown and a field goal.
Despite only managing 180 total yards of offense, Duke's defense did enough to hold off a struggling Seminoles team. Graduate linebacker Ozzie Nicholas and senior linebacker Cameron Bergeron were key contributors, with both players tallying nine tackles. The Blue Devils forced a game-clinching fumble late in the fourth quarter, which sealed their sixth win of the season.
FSU's Struggles Continue
For Florida State, the game was another low point in a season that started with high expectations. Quarterback Brock Glenn was benched after committing three turnovers in the second quarter, only to be reinserted later in the game. Glenn finished with 110 passing yards and two interceptions. The Seminoles’ offense was able to score a special teams touchdown on the second-half kickoff return by Samuel Singelton but could not find consistency against Duke’s relentless defense.
Despite outgaining Duke 150 to 62 yards in the first half, FSU’s mistakes proved costly, with all three first-half turnovers turning into points for Duke. Freshman running back Kam Davis’s fumble in the fourth quarter ended any hope of a Seminoles comeback, as Duke recovered the ball and held on for the win.
Mike Norvell's Hot Seat Heats Up
With the loss, the pressure continues to mount on Florida State head coach Mike Norvell. After a 13-0 regular season last year, expectations were high for the Seminoles. However, this season’s 1-6 start has placed Norvell under intense scrutiny. He signed an extension through 2031 earlier this year, which includes a buyout clause of approximately $65 million. While it seems unlikely that Florida State would part ways with Norvell due to the high buyout cost, donor influence could play a factor if the season continues on this downward trajectory.
Looking Ahead
Florida State’s season doesn’t get any easier, as they prepare to face No. 6 Miami next week on the road. The Seminoles will need to regroup quickly if they hope to salvage any part of this season. Duke, on the other hand, will look to continue their success as they host No. 21 SMU in what could be a key game in the ACC title race.
This win not only marks a turning point for Duke but could also signal a major shift in Florida State’s football program if changes aren’t made soon.
