Drake Bulldogs Dominate Miami Hurricanes in Charleston Classic Opener
The Drake Bulldogs delivered an emphatic 80-69 victory over the Miami Hurricanes on Thursday in the first round of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic at TD Arena. With a relentless performance on both ends of the court, Drake showcased their physicality and poise, handing Miami their first loss of the season while maintaining their undefeated record at 4-0.
Drake’s Strong Start Sets the Tone
Drake wasted no time establishing their dominance, opening the game with a 7-0 run. Mitch Mascari drained a three-pointer to start the scoring, followed by buckets from Cam Manyawu and Bennett Stirtz. This early momentum extended to a 28-15 lead with just under nine minutes remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs’ control of the pace and ability to attack inside put Miami on the defensive from the outset.
Despite a late surge by Miami, which included a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to five points, Drake remained composed. Back-to-back layups in the final minute of the first half pushed the Bulldogs’ lead to 36-27 at halftime. Bennett Stirtz led the charge with 10 first-half points, supported by Mascari and Nate Ferguson, who contributed critical baskets.
Hurricanes Struggle to Keep Pace
Miami entered the game with one of the top offenses in the nation, averaging 98 points per game, but Drake’s defense effectively neutralized their rhythm. The Hurricanes shot just 30% from the field in the first half and failed to establish a presence inside, managing only four points in the paint during the opening 20 minutes.
Nijel Pack led Miami with 17 points, but his shooting struggles (4-for-13) epitomized the team’s overall inefficiency. Forward Brandon Johnson was a bright spot, scoring all seven of his points in the second half and grabbing seven rebounds. However, Miami’s inability to string together consistent offensive possessions left them chasing the game throughout.
Dominance in the Paint and on the Boards
Drake’s superiority in the paint was one of the defining aspects of the game. The Bulldogs outscored Miami 36-18 in points in the paint, including a 22-4 advantage in the first half. Their physicality extended to the boards, where they outrebounded Miami 35-23, including 14 offensive rebounds that translated into 13 second-chance points.
Daniel Abreu played a pivotal role in the Bulldogs’ interior success, recording 18 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. His ability to secure offensive boards and convert free throws (9-for-10) ensured that Miami had little room to recover.
Second-Half Surge Secures Victory
The Hurricanes attempted to mount a comeback early in the second half, narrowing the deficit to four points at 44-40 after an and-one play by Brandon Johnson. However, Drake quickly regained control, capitalizing on Miami’s foul trouble and defensive lapses. A pair of free throws and a clutch three-pointer from Mitch Mascari fueled a decisive 7-0 run, extending Drake’s lead to 15 points with just over a minute remaining.
Drake’s efficiency from the free-throw line in the second half was a critical factor, as they converted 20 of 21 attempts. This precision under pressure highlighted the team’s discipline and poise, key elements of their game plan under new head coach Ben McCollum.
Individual Standouts Propel Bulldogs
Bennett Stirtz delivered an outstanding performance, leading all scorers with 21 points and dishing out six assists. His ability to control the game’s tempo and deliver in crucial moments underscored his value to the team. Mitch Mascari added 15 points, including three three-pointers, while Daniel Abreu’s double-double provided stability inside.
The balanced contributions from Drake’s starters and key bench players like Tavion Banks, who scored nine points, demonstrated the depth and versatility of this year’s Bulldogs squad.
Learning Opportunities for Miami
For Miami, the loss highlighted areas for improvement as they continue their non-conference schedule. The Hurricanes struggled to adapt to Drake’s physicality and size, particularly on the boards. Miami’s guard-heavy lineup, featuring Nijel Pack and Jalen Blackmon, found limited success against the Bulldogs’ disciplined defense.
The Hurricanes will aim to address these issues as they prepare for their next game against the loser of the Oklahoma State-Florida Atlantic matchup. Head coach Jim Larranaga will undoubtedly focus on improving defensive communication and offensive execution.
Bulldogs Continue Strong Start to Season
Drake’s victory marked their first win over an ACC opponent since 2017 and their first against a Power Five team since 2022. The Bulldogs have now started the season 4-0 for the third time in five years, a testament to the program’s consistency and growth. Head coach Ben McCollum, in his first season at the helm, continues to build on the team’s strengths, emphasizing discipline and resilience.
The Bulldogs will face Florida Atlantic in the semifinal round of the Charleston Classic. With their momentum and balanced attack, Drake will look to extend their winning streak and make a strong case as a tournament contender come March.
