AP Top 25 College Football Poll: Texas Takes the Top Spot as Alabama Tumbles After Upset
In a week filled with unexpected results and high drama, the Texas Longhorns have reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the latest AP Top 25 college football poll. With Texas enjoying a bye week, several top-ranked teams faltered, allowing the Longhorns to leapfrog to the top. The biggest storyline of the week was Alabama’s shocking 40-35 loss to Vanderbilt, which sent shockwaves through the college football world.
Five of the top 11 teams suffered losses in Week 6, leading to a massive reshuffling of the rankings. Texas, Ohio State, and Oregon now sit at the top of the poll, while teams like Alabama, Tennessee, and Missouri slid down after their defeats.
Top 10 Shakeup
Texas’ return to the No. 1 spot was largely due to the losses of key contenders like Alabama, Tennessee, and Michigan. With Alabama falling to Vanderbilt and Tennessee losing to Arkansas, the door was open for the Longhorns to ascend. Ohio State moved up to No. 2 after a strong performance, and Oregon, fresh off a convincing win, climbed to No. 3. Penn State, which cruised to a victory over Northwestern, rounded out the top four, while Georgia, the defending national champions, slipped to No. 5.
The Miami Hurricanes continued their rise in the rankings, moving up to No. 6 after an impressive win over Virginia. Meanwhile, Alabama dropped five spots to No. 7 following their stunning loss to Vanderbilt. Tennessee fell four spots to No. 8 after being upset by Arkansas, which saw Razorbacks fans storm the field to celebrate a victory that could define their season.
Ole Miss and Clemson completed the top 10. The Rebels delivered a commanding win over Kentucky to move to No. 9, while Clemson, recovering from an early season loss, took care of business against Boston College to secure the No. 10 spot.

Vanderbilt’s Historic Victory Over Alabama
Without question, the biggest shock of the week was Vanderbilt’s upset win over No. 1 Alabama. The Commodores, who had entered the game as 23.5-point underdogs, stunned the Crimson Tide with a 40-35 victory in what may be the biggest win in the program’s history. Vanderbilt had been 0-60 against top-five opponents but finally broke through, with quarterback Diego Pavia delivering a standout performance.
Pavia threw for 252 yards and two touchdowns, while the Vanderbilt defense held Alabama’s high-powered offense in check for much of the game. Alabama, which had looked invincible in its win over Georgia the previous week, struggled with consistency on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Jalen Milroe had 317 passing yards and two touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Vanderbilt’s determination.
The upset sent Alabama tumbling down the rankings, and head coach Kalen DeBoer now faces the challenge of regrouping his team as they look to stay in the College Football Playoff conversation.
Other Notable Losses and Changes
Tennessee’s loss to Arkansas was another surprise result. The Volunteers had entered the game ranked No. 4 and were considered one of the top contenders for a playoff spot. However, Arkansas, led by quarterback KJ Jefferson, pulled off a 19-14 upset that dropped Tennessee to No. 8 in the poll. Jefferson’s dual-threat ability kept Tennessee’s defense off balance, and the Razorbacks’ defense came up with key stops to secure the win.
Missouri also suffered a significant defeat, falling 41-10 to Texas A&M. The Tigers, who had narrowly won their previous games, were overwhelmed by the Aggies’ aggressive offense and defense. Texas A&M jumped to No. 21 in the rankings, while Missouri slid seven spots to No. 16.
In another key matchup, Washington defeated No. 10 Michigan in a rematch of last year’s national championship game. Michigan’s quarterback struggles continued, and the Wolverines’ offense was stifled by Washington’s defense. The loss knocked Michigan down to No. 24, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy.
Teams on the Rise: BYU and SMU
While some teams fell, others took advantage of the chaos. BYU, which had a bye week, climbed to No. 14 after seeing several teams ahead of them lose. SMU also made a significant move, entering the rankings at No. 25 after a 34-27 road win over No. 22 Louisville. The Mustangs’ balanced attack and strong defense made them one of the surprise teams of the week.
Looking Ahead: Week 7’s Key Matchups
As Week 7 approaches, several high-profile matchups are on the horizon. The top-10 clash between Ohio State and Oregon will be the centerpiece of the weekend, as two undefeated teams battle for supremacy. Texas will take on rival Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, a game that always delivers excitement. Meanwhile, LSU will face off against Ole Miss in a crucial SEC matchup that could have major playoff implications.
With so many upsets already reshuffling the rankings, college football fans can expect more drama as the season progresses. Teams like Alabama and Tennessee will be looking to bounce back, while Texas and Ohio State will try to maintain their grip on the top of the rankings.
