Abilene Christian Nearly Shocks Texas Tech in Nail-Biter, Falls Just Short
In what almost became a historic night, Abilene Christian University (ACU) came within inches of pulling off a monumental upset over Power 4 opponent Texas Tech. The Wildcats, who haven’t beaten the Red Raiders since the 1920s, pushed the game into overtime but ultimately fell 52-51 in a heart-stopping season opener on Saturday night in Lubbock.
A Near-Historic Upset
This game was more than just a season opener—it was an opportunity for Abilene Christian to rewrite their history against Texas Tech. Their rivalry, dating back to the 1920s, has seen the Red Raiders consistently dominate. But from the opening whistle, it was clear that this would be different. ACU played with intensity and confidence that caught the Red Raiders off-guard.
Led by senior quarterback Maverick McIvor, who transferred to ACU after starting his career at Texas Tech, the Wildcats put together a formidable performance. McIvor threw for an astounding 506 yards and three touchdowns, including a 56-yard bomb to wide receiver Kobe Clark, which gave the Wildcats a stunning 28-24 lead in the third quarter. Clark, the go-to target for McIvor, finished with 176 receiving yards and two touchdowns on the night, leaving Texas Tech’s secondary scrambling for answers.
Texas Tech’s Narrow Escape
Despite ACU’s relentless pressure, Texas Tech eventually found a way to claw back. Red Raiders quarterback Tyler Shough managed to put together key drives late in the game, throwing for 347 yards and four touchdowns. Tech running back Tahj Brooks also broke off a 41-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 45, forcing overtime.
In the extra period, both teams scored quickly. But after a touchdown by Texas Tech to take the lead 52-51, ACU head coach Adam Dorrel made the call to go for the win with a two-point conversion attempt. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the Red Raiders' defense came up with a game-saving stop on McIvor’s pass, narrowly escaping what would have been one of the biggest upsets in college football history.
A Gritty Effort from ACU
ACU’s defense held its own against Texas Tech’s potent offense, forcing two key turnovers and pressuring Shough throughout the game. Linebacker Noah Caldwell was a force, registering 12 tackles and a critical interception that set up one of ACU’s scoring drives. The Wildcats played with heart, proving they could compete with a Power 4 opponent despite being heavy underdogs.
ACU's offensive balance also kept Texas Tech on their heels. The Wildcats racked up 573 total yards, with McIvor distributing the ball to multiple receivers and their running game consistently moving the chains. The performance not only pushed Texas Tech to the limit but also showed that ACU is more than capable of hanging with top-tier programs.
Bus Accident After the Game
Tragically, the excitement of the night was overshadowed by a traffic accident involving one of ACU’s team buses, caused by a drunk driver. Reports indicate that several players and staff members were involved, though the extent of injuries is still being determined. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected, and we hope for a speedy recovery for those injured in the accident.
Looking Ahead
While the loss will be tough to swallow, Abilene Christian’s near-upset will likely serve as a defining moment in their season. The Wildcats showed incredible grit and resilience, nearly toppling a Power 4 opponent for the first time in nearly a century. As ACU looks ahead to its next game, they can take confidence from their performance and build on the momentum moving forward.
For Texas Tech, this game will serve as a wake-up call. While they escaped with the win, the Red Raiders will need to make adjustments, particularly on defense, as they prepare for a challenging Big 12 schedule.
